Overhauling the Wagoneer's 360
« on: November 17 2017, 10:38:45 AM »
Been toying with the idea of overhauling the 360 in the Wagoneer.

It's not a drag vehicle nor will it be a high revving platform. Just lots of low rpm torque is what I'm after and some decent oil pressure at a hot idle.

Seen and read a few articles of stroking it to a 408 but with lots of rpm in mind on those builds.

Anyone put together a build with those goals in mind?

What about snagging a magnum 360 out of a truck?

Friend of mine has a magnum 360 in an old work truck with 124k on the odometer. It cranks right up and idles super smooth. He's been wanting to trade it to me for a four wheeler that I have. Thought about swapping it into the Wagoneer but haven't researched it at all. I guess the big question for me would be if it would mount up to the 727 that's already in the jeep. I do not want to tackle removing the whole drive train. All is working condition as far as that goes with no leaks.

Is a turbo out of the question? There has to be lots of room under the hood... make it a Wagoneer Trackhawk.

Seriously though a fresh rebuild and some eBay parts would be epic.

I believe the magnum bolts in place of the old school small blocks. Hotrod has some decent articles on them.

No turbo aspirations for the dragoneer. There is lots of room though.

Thanks for the link. Will do some reading at work this week. Working nights and it's usually pretty slow

that 360 is an AMC ,not a mopar!
and should have  T400  trans,  (amc bolt pattern  on the bellhousing)

best upgrade would be a amc 401,  100 % bolt in,

the 360 are reliable as heck,  for torque, I suggest  alum intake, and free flowing exhaust,
the heads have 30 degree seats, and  lend themselves to  good  3 or5 angle valve job.
big improvement  there, also, any cleaning of the ports  will help alot,
a cam will help, but  keep it under 218 @50 duration, and possibly 2 to 4 degrees advanced,

my J10 quadratrac would smoke all 4 tires from a standstill, (360)

I know it seems out of place but this 1982 wagoneer does have a 727 behind the 360. It even has a locking converter. VIN also confirms it. I pulled it when restoring the vehicle and had it and the transfer case gone thru. Didn't need any internal parts replaced but almost every seal was dry rotted and it leaked everywhere. Almost every other Wagoneer that I've seen has a T400 behind the 360 but not this one. Checking options on this year model and a 727 was available.

Thanks for the tips on the heads, intake and cam. I've read a few forum posts about oil pressure with these 360's and most confirm that anything above 10 psi at a hot idle is impressive.

Read all the links at that site. Appears to be a drop in with header install being the big pain. Will bolt right up to the 727 tranny. They seem to be advocates of throwing the magnum in with an intake swap and carb setup. I'm inclined to keep the factory fuel injection.

Again thanks for the link

So is it a mopar 360 or amc 360? http://www.novak-adapt.com/knowledge/transmissions/automatic/727 This states the amc and mopar transmissions are different cases and bolt patterns.

Good find.  I have an AMC 360 in the wagoneer.  Looks like I'll be overhauling the original engine or looking for a Mopar 727

Keep it simple - overhaul what you have or find a 401 to swap in

are you aware what "jeep" stands for?

just everyone elses parts.

AMC used parts from all manufactures, ford, gm  chry,
so depending the year,  etc..

AMC  always used their own V8 in wagoneer's, J10's
290, 304,343, 360, 390,401 all the same platform,  some interchangeabi lity .
390 was the HP engine, but  limited  production,
401 can be found, and is a bolt in, with no mods,
the 727 trans (in there now) will have a AMC bellhousing, so will only fit AMC.
for a carb,I'd suggest  edelbrock 600/650 cfm,  the metering rods can be tuned for
exceptional  mileage, (for a jeep) ( have never seen better than 15mpg)
anything bigger will slow the  intake velocity, and the carb will not atomize as well,
I doubt  you will ever exceed 5000 rpm, so no need for big carb, big cam, etc.
if you change heads, 1974 and later have hardened seats ( must have nowdays)

Ain't that the truth. FoMoCo carb and ignition. I managed to squeak out almost 15 and half mpg out of that little two barrel. Once I figured out the power valve needed an external vacuum source and tweaked the idle jets with a vacuum guage, it picked up from 11 mpg. There's something to be said for how easy an engine and carb start up so quickly. Doesn't need three revolutions to make sure all signals from sensors are there before turning on the ignition. My Wagoneer lights off quick when it's warm
