IHADAV8 Playground / Re: discussion on copper gaskets
« on: May 26 2018, 10:27:51 AM »
That is pretty much it.  GM MLS exhaust gaskets are embossed for sealing and do a great job.  So, a single layer copper gasket without embossing is going to be hit or miss on its effectiveness. The stock thin 80s flanges are junk.

This is why I have moved to v-bands.  I just put the whole exhaust back on the wagon in under an hour yesterday - leak free.

Nope.  But there is a part I want back: the L89 396 I sold to buy my Buick.  It should have gone into my MCSS as I had originally planned.

I got arrested for possession of alcohol by a minor in 1989.

FTFY. ;)

That's not illegal. Age of Consent in GA is 16.

Giggidy  :tongue

With or without a signed permission slip from a parent or guardian?

William Edwards Deming, an engineer from Iowa helped post war Japan develop a systematic improvement in quality- an interesting read.

I attended a seminar by him around 1989

I attended Disney World around 1989.

Cough, cough start looking at gt3582 turbos on eBay - you have to watch the specs as they vary but most of them are 62/62. They come in many flavors and results may vary. It’d be awesome to have the resources to do some independent testing.

Yup, I am considering one of these for Natasha's Colorado.  Folks are using them as twins for cheap on junkyard V8s.

OK, I'm seeing $130 turbos on the bay. Are there compressor maps for this stuff?
It would be quite funny to take a far east intercooler and turbo and be competitive in our elitist circles.

No, they are known-unknowns - but you can estimate the performance based upon known-knowns of like turbos.  I'd argue that a bit too much thought is put into things sometimes... just accepting that it works in an acceptable range is good enough.  It isn't an F1 motor.

I have a Chineseium (bottom mounted and scooped) intercooler on my TBSS and it is making 650+hp and has incredibly low IATs (at 12psi).  I had a modified FMIC from an International semi on my Buick and it worked great at 30psi (it had better hold given the original application) and always had great IATs too.  Cost effective options work.

The quality gap has closed and many of our speed parts are coming from off-shore locations... I'd like to continue to build fun cars AND put my girls through baseball, soccer, swimming, horseback riding, university, marriage too; and if it means a few "corners" are cut so be it.

I cannot wait to pull the compressor housing off and paint it lavender like the valve covers... and maybe put some My Little Pony stickers under the clearcoat too.  Just to further fuck with people's egos.

I was generalizing. ;)

But, since my flavour of turdbo LS is 5.3L or less it makes good sense.  The 5.3L I built over the Winter has half-assed ported small-valve heads and an LS6 cam and ported LS6 intake so that will help the situation. The 4.8L I have on the floor is getting a healthy cam, some stock 241s, and a TBSS intake.

In either form they suit the GT45 turbo well.

So, if you are doing a 4.1L+ Buick V6, these GT45s would keep up alright. Employ some spooling tricks and it'll do alright by you.

EDIT: New muffler showed up today.

There are more than a few guys running 9s with these GT45s.  Making an adapter flange would be easy enough.

My T63E lasted forever at 30psi and tonnes of mileage.

I just bought a $178 "GT45" turbo off eBay - it has journal bearings and is proven. It is essentially a PT67 compressor with an PT88ish hotside.

Billet wheels and ceramic ball bearings are not worth the cost for a moderate improvement in performance, IMO.

IHADAV8 Playground / Re: RJC Power plates
« on: April 03 2018, 11:06:02 PM »
Yeah, I drank the Power Plate Koolaid.

In retrospect it might not have been necessary in a pressurized plenum where the valve and valve events would have dictated flow.  In the boosted LS world there are lots of common plenum intakes, even the Mid-Rise on our TBSS is a dual quad dual plane, and there are no known cylinder distribution issues.

That said, I never changed a head gasket in my Buick.
