Is there such a thing as QUALITY body shops?
« on: February 10 2007, 05:54:14 PM »
Basically an update on my Cadillac being in the body shop.

I get a call Thursday about 4:30 from the body shop, it's Kenny, the manager.

Kenny:
"Hey Mark! Calling to let you know your car is ready - we'll be here until about 6:30"

Me:
"That's great news! Is it all nice, perfect and all that? (me laughing) Because I'm a picky son of a bitch. (more laughing, both parties)"

Kenny:
"Oh yes - we do great work, it looks great."

Me:
"OK - I guess I should have told you that I was picky before the work started." - we both laugh, I agree to pick it up Thursday night.

My cell rings about 10 minutes later..

Me:
"Hello?"

Kenny:
"Hey Mark.. Would it be OK if we put off the car pickup until tomorrow? I found some things that need to be worked on."

Me:
(Laughing) "OK Kenny - that would be fine, make sure it's nice - thanks"

Kenny:
"OK - thanks, see you tomorrow!"

Guess he went and looked at it after I told him I was a picky bitch, and wanted to fix some things.

He calls me Friday - tells me the car is now ready again, and that I can get it before 6:00PM. I can't get there by then, so he tells me to come by Saturday.

Well, after a long night at the pub, I finally got ready and walked to the body shop (VERY close, maybe 3-4 blocks), get there, and the front door is locked. I notice the side gate is open, and meander around to find some body workers. They tell me that the shop closes @ 2:00PM, Kenny didn't share that info with me.

I tell the guy to get someone on the phone - He says "The guy didn't bring his phone with him."

WTF? So I said - "OK - the place is on fire - who do you call?"

Finally, he takes his cell out and calls someone, laughs, mumbled in Spanish, and then hands me the phone. It's not Kenny, it's some other gabroni that basically tells me to pund sand. OK - fuck 'em.

On the way out, I decide to look at my car, and it's NOT what I call good work - pics below.

About 4:30, my phone rings - I see it's the body shop, cancel the rings. three more calls, he finally leaves a message  - Kenny is at the shop, and wants to know if I want to pick,up my car. At this point, I am going to email him with pics of what needs to be fixed, and see what he does. Looks like 'm driving the TR-with-the-interior-lights-stuck-on for a few more days.

Sorry for pic quality - They are from my Razr camera phone

Probably not, unless they are working on one of their own projects. Sad, but seems to be true.

Geez man, people try to get away with what they can. How fucked up is that? What did it look like before they tidied it up? Get a Bondo gauge on that thing.

Let me extend the question a bit and ask if there are any quality car shops period? I wonder when someone asks these fricken people what taking pride in their work means to them, what their answer is? In the age of the internet and instant access to information you would think folks would get their shit together.

The only time I take my car to a garage is for the state mandated yearly safety inspection, at which time they generally manage to break and\or lose something. Reatta center cap was lost one year (60 bucks to replace)...light switch was broken last year.......... ..

At a body shop it is all about quantity not quality. Most peopele do not care or do not want to bother. Last body shop repair we had it took two extra weeks to get it acceptable, not perfect but acceptable. If I was not getting rid of the car it would probably have been at least two more weeks.
