So I helpd my parents buy a car tonight...
« on: October 18 2006, 12:11:51 AM »
I was going to my mother's on Sunday to watch the Bucs game (family tradition) and I see a sweet 94 on the side of the road for sale. Green, w/tan leather interior. I ask mom, and she says she has seen it, and is interested in it as a replacement for my father's rather beat Grand Marquis. (Shoddy wipers, only 3 windows roll down, no A/C, no heat (bypassed) and a very whiney PS pump)

I tell my mother I will get the # and call.

It's a 1994 Cadillac Deville Concourse. 147k, newer tires, new A/C ~ 7 months ago (New GM compressor, not rebuilt), new front brakes, new rear suspension air pump, all fluids changed, etc.. etc..

I show up tonight to look at it, the father's not there, his son takes me out to the car..

Nice kid, and after looking at it for awhile, he tells me to take it for a test drive. I leave me Eldo there, and ride off. Wow! A LOT of power for that big of a car (4.6l Northstar), runs and drives very nice. Stops on a dime, and tranny shift is imperceptible. Every thing works, and this thing is LOADED, including:
Heated seats.
Integrated garage door opener
Sunroof
16 way adjustable 40/60 seats
Basically, every option Cadillac ever offered that year

99% of everything works, the interior is an 8/10, some wear, some loose panels, not bad at all!

Only things I found bad was a slight oil leak (I think it's valve covers), and what looks like a recent radiator leak. It has Dex in it, (nice and clear) and there's no evidence that it's been a leak for more than a week or so.

So.. he was asking 2500, I got him to let it go for 2k, and my father will now be riding in style. To top it off the guy offered to get me a radiator at jobber

That sounds reasonable. Personally, I hate Cadillacs. (especially the Northstars)
They're waaaaay over engineered. Here are a few examples:
1) You have to remove the intake manifold to replace the starter.
2) The coolant/water ratio must be maintained nearly perfect, or an over
     heating condition will result.
3) A special socket is required to replace the water pump.
4) Replacing a power steering line is an absolute bitch to do.
5) Drivability problems are harder to diagnose than ANY BUICK EVER MADE !
6) The transmissions are inadequate to handle the power that the engine
    produces, and frequently fail.

When they work, they're a very comfy ride. When it starts acting up, you'll
want to sell it.

4. So are most car repairs, just suck it up and be a man.
5. What do you mean?

You'll see. It's still a nice gesture on your part
buying it for them. :atbeer:
