Trans doesn't shift - in D/OD all the time

I finally got my 84 T close to being right. (Can't say finished, never finished)
. I am having transmission problems. I know nothing about auto transmissions. It seems like it is in D or OD all the time. It is slow off the line and it doesn't go through the gears. If I'm driving it doesn't downshift. If I'm going 30, 40 mph and put the shifter in 2 or 1 it doesn't change.
It's the same if I put it in 1, 2, D whatever. I get no reaction.
HELP!

Thanks. It is hooked up. I can put it in D or R and drive around. It's just not going through the gears. When I put it in gear- D or O, there's no shifting, just a slow start.
I am crawling under and checking it out.

Be sure the tv cable is hooked up, adjusted, and actually is moving the valve. Shimy has been thru the drill of having to change a cable in recent times so he can probably provide better info on how to check that

A lot of broken parts does not make you a racer; it makes you a slow learner.

Thanks, I will check everything and get back. I have been gone over the weekend. On it today. The trans is the last thing holding me up. It's always something.
I appreciate the feedback.
