Heater box sealing

I'm looking for what would be best to use to seal the outside top of the heater/AC box at the firewall.
OEM looked like a thick tar that has harden over the years.
Kinda thought of maybe using a black seam sealer and or Windshield sealant or something similar?
Any ideas would be appreciated.

Sounds alot like butyl tape that glazers use. I have forgotten what the specific automotive version is called.

I was going to use that strip caulk for the lower part of the box.


But when looking for the Butyl tape you mentioned earlier I did find this.

I'm with Earl on both points.

PS (and you may alread know this):Good habit to develop is when u stop squeezing immediately release the plunger with your thumb and throw a paper towel under the tip- at least it give you a chance

I definitely would like to get that heater box off in the future.
If not for me then for the next guy who owns this car.

I used some kind of weatherstrippi ng seal that came in strips arrayed on a waxy paper...forget what it was called.  May have been by 3M? strip caulk?

Good for stickin' the brown paper back onto the inner doors too

I used what they called " Dum Dum ". Wet your fingers while you remove it from the tape. I was told some dealerships use it. About $12.00 for a roll at Advance.
