C'mon guitar g00r00s - WHat amp?
« on: July 10 2006, 11:22:33 AM »
Hey rockers.

I need a SMALL practice amp (remember, I live (and want to stay) in an apartment), I am thinking Sam Ash, there's a location very close to me.

http://www.samash.com/catalog/groups.asp?GroupCode=sm_guitar_amps

Also - I assume I also need the following:

Tuner
Strap
Picks

What else?

WTH is Sylvan?

You know what? What kind of sound are you going for and how much do you want to spend? I'm a big fan of Fender amps, but if you want distortion you'll hate me. Figure out who you want to sound like and we can go from there.
My 1958 Mamiya can beat up whatever camera you just wasted your money on.

Thanks for the link Phil - but it doesn't come up for some reaso.

Natty - I'm looking for distortion, and generally a hard rock sound.

Someone receommended this on another forum:
http://www.guitarcenter.com/shop/product/buy_roland_cube_15_1x8_15w_guitar_combo_amp?full_sku=480022

Roland Cube 8" 15W..

Insights?

Oh - and I don't want to spend much at all - I'm not even sure I will persure it too long. Don't want to spend $xxx on an amp I will just have to sell later.

Give us some examples on what you mean by a hard rock sound.
Name some bands/guitarists that have the sound you're looking for.
Include some song titles...

You cock rocker! Shit, I'd say get a Marshall, but that Roland looks damn good. I'd say try them both out.

Dude, you said:

1. Small
2. Practice
3. Cheap

With that criteria all amps start to sound pretty much the same. Once you upgrade to a combo/club amp, then you'll need to worry about what kind.

I'd recommend going a little larger than a practice amp.
I'd say something in the 30 to 100 watt range. Hear me out.
Find something that sounds clean, and then get a lower end
effects processor to go with it. That'll produce 99% of the sounds
you're looking for. An amp in that range will likely have a single 12"
speaker, and will be capable of some low end as well as crunch.
It'll produce a warm sound when playing clean as well. You won't
have to crank it to get the right sound, and should you become
proficient enough, it'll work for jamming in a garage or basement.

Rob makes a good point. I think we need a better idea of A: your price range and B: exactly what sound you're looking for. With that, I think we can give you better conflicting advice.  :D

I'll throw this out...

Get a very cheap Fender and be done with it... Chances are in about a year you wont touch the guitar again...

Yeah man, Phil made since for once. Buy a cheapy,  if you want to go deeper, do it when you feel like you'll dedicate more time to it. You said it yourself "I'm not even sure I will persure it too long"
Save the bumper fillers!
Move to Canadia!

If it sounds right, you'll be more likely to pursue it.

I have to disagree with you there. As far as sounding right, you
can tell right away, not to the ability of a seasoned player
but you can tell. I say that because, he could be playing something correct, but because of a cheap setup, it'll sound wrong causing him to become discouraged.
I believe that he could find a good sounding amp for under $200 though.
