RJC boost controller?
« on: August 26 2018, 07:41:05 PM »
Just wondering who all has one and what there thoughts are?  I was going to put mine on today but it would be incredibly hard with the 6468 on there because of the size of the turbo and the small fitting that has to go to the wastegate, so I will have to put a connection on there to make it work.
According to my power logger my boost kicks in at 2800rpm but doesn't get up to full boost till about 4800 rpm.  I guess that isn't too bad with a 68 exhaust wheel and .85 A/R.  Wondering what the RJC will be like on it?

If the gate is cracking open before it hits full boost then it should benefit from a controller.

I run one and I think it works great. I've never had issues with spooling so I'm not sure if it's helping or not. I can say for sure that it is not hurting. I think it's cool because you can adjust boost with it.

I bought one of these when the ricer in me got loose.  Seems to work, but, I am not running much boost at the moment.  http://www.grimmspeed.com/manual-boost-controller/

the RJC, or any of the similar ones, will definitely help assuming you have a good converter that is matched to your turbo

A lot of broken parts does not make you a racer; it makes you a slow learner.

There isn't much tension on the arm so it would definitely be opening up but that being said the car pulls like mad on 10 psi of boost.  I also have an external waste gate set to open up at 25psi.

I did have the KB bleeder's that you put inline to the wastegate.  Almost the same idea except when it got cold, the 1 psi orfice became 5 psi.  I was thinking of a .63 exhaust housing but I would probably never hook up!

How does it spool if you leave at 5psi?

Kenne Bell used orfices to put in line to the waste gate.  So if you were maxed at 19spi you put in the 1 psi orifice to give you 20psi or the 5 psi orifice for 24 psi total.  It worked great in warm weather put when it got colder out the cold air bleeding through the 1 psi orifice would add 5 psi extra boost or more.

I have a turbonetics one for my external waste gate mounted inside the console.  Although that one does like much friendlier in the control setting department.

I was worried about that with mine but it will go up to 30psi no problem probably more but I never tried.

I was going to put mine on today but it would be incredibly hard with the 6468 on there because of the size of the turbo and the small fitting that has to go to the wastegate, so I will have to put a connection on there to make it work.

That's why I redesigned mine to use 1/4" fittings so the things can seal without leaking and blowing a headgasket. Not to mention, get rid of that stupid 90*.
I was pretty surprised to see they never caught on. Most people think that ancient design is solely an RJC thing I guess.  (back in the old days it was called a 'Grainger valve' since all the parts could be found at Grainger Supply Company).

According to my power logger my boost kicks in at 2800rpm but doesn't get up to full boost till about 4800 rpm.  I guess that isn't too bad with a 68 exhaust wheel and .85 A/R.  Wondering what the RJC will be like on it?

Odds are it'll help with the spool time and get you a full boost sooner than the time it takes to reach 4800.   Basically the valve keeps the wastegate shut until the last second then flings it open all at once when the desired boost level is reached.   Say you're running 20PSI 'tuner style'...  At around 10PSI your wastegate is almost halfway open.  So only half the exhaust energy is accelerating the turbo.  The other half is prematurely dumped. Since the turbo runs on exhaust energy, it doesn't make sense to dump energy while you're needing to add energy.

That being said, there's also a chance you can install the MBC and blow the tires off from faster spool.   That's much more fun but will probably slow the car down.

I have two of these  http://www.gusmahon.org/html/boostcontrol.htm

I did not use the elbow.  I sweated a piece of copper tubing in the end.  they work better than the turbonetics air compressor regulator valve on my cars.  I bought the Grim controller linked above for my GN, but as my alky is dead, I am not running but 14 psi at the moment.  It appears that it will provide all the boost that I want, however
