FELLOW GN USER HAVING A POSSIBLE TPS ISSUE
« on: August 21 2018, 10:09:04 AM »
Has anyone seen this issue before. This is from a grand national user who posted on facebook. Looks like a tps issue possibly. See video attached:

Kinda hard to troubleshoot a problem with almost zero information.  yeah, it could be a tps problem.  It could be a wiring problem.  It could be an ecm problem, or it might be associated with a maf problem. Heck, it might even be a scan tool problem!

He does not tell us if the tps reading changes with throttle input or any thing that would guide us.

If you ever have such a problem, I would suggest connecting a meter to the tps and see if it reads the same as the scantool.  Then I would open the throttle and see if the tps increments properly.  I would also be sure the tps had not come loose and rotated on it's own.

If the tps does not increment properly and/or cannot be set to read properly, then it is probably a bad tps.

The 941 O2 reading, if that occurs while idling,  is probably because the tps is telling the ecm that the car is moving at speed an the ecm is commanding cruise fuel or more.  If it is showing with the engine off, key on, then it means something else like the ecm is wacked, I would guess.

I do my best not to get involved on FB...

High humor on the vid. Tell him it ain't gonna fix itself.
He needs to try the key on engine off and move the throttle to wfo and back and see about the tps and what it is doing. Then we can move on from there. If it isn't moving from its lw setting be it .42 or what ever, and going to the wfo at 4.5 or whatever he has problems there.

Like mentioned, check the TPS with the car not running and see what the voltage is for no throttle and WOT.  Also check for linearity, making sure the voltage doesn't make huge jumps.

Those facebook ''tech'' pages are a clusterfuck of bad advice and even worse advice.

I'm really amazed how how many newbies have found low mile cars that ''need nothing'' but upgrades for more power.

The third generation of owners is coming on. The first and seconds are and have died or just moved on. Lots of these cars were bought as a toy and sat in a garage under a cover and as owners lost interest , were forgotten about. Now they hit the market and we get a new barrage of the same questions.

Hang on it is a wild ride. Upside is most of the probs have already been solved.

Each generation that comes along knows less about cars than the prior generation.  Many of them not only don't know how to use a volt meter, but, they don't even have a clue what one is.  Many don't know how to check for simple things like spark and they cannot look at a simple wiring diagram and pick out a purple wire and follow it to see where it goes.

They are almost impossible to help and when one does try, they mainly want to know what part to buy rather than learning how to determine if it is bad....Worst, when you tell them to check something, they will tell you they did because there is no way most of them will admit they did not understand.  When you get fifty people suggesting things to check, they may do three things out of the fifty plus suggestions and then claim everything checks out.  Impossible to help most of them.

That also applies to professional mechanics as well.   It baffles me how someone can't get basic 12V and still manage to work on cars.

I can't count how many times I've tried to teach someone how a basic relay works...  and failed.

And I'm not talking about 'complex' stuff like wiring multiple relays to do polarity reverse 'magic' (power door lock, window circuits, or a motor direction). Just a basic ground trigger to activate a higher load device.

Or if they know a little about AC they will connect the black wire to the positive connection thinking it is the hot one and red to negative.  I think the only exception is thermocouples are hooked up that way where the red wire is negative.

They give away meters with the right coupon at the harbor freight. Not a fluke but it can measure voltage and continuity.

Next is the ability and willingness to learn. Unfortunately our school system has become a giant babysitting service and those that do come to learn are taught there is only right and wrong answers. And that memorizing things is knowledge. And don't make mistakes, mistakes are bad.

Without the ability to actually go hands on and actually use reasoning to figure out problems we get the zombies they are putting out.
At least there is YouTube for dumba$$ed like me to learn to let the magic smoke out of all things electrical.
