Flipping cars
« on: August 20 2018, 02:21:48 PM »
Anyone flip stuff on the side?

Ive found a car that I’m seriously considering purchasing and flipping. It’s a clean 99 Mustang (I know). 4.6/5 speed, and the a/c is supposed to work. Now for the fun stuff, it’s got a on3 turbo kit with the base 70mm@7psi (which requires an aftermarket k-member), cams, newer clutch, exhaust, and comes with boxes of parts to turn it up (whatever that means, alky kit maybe?). Basically the owner shipped out to the navy, and his dad just wants it gone. It needs a though detail maybe some wiring cleaned up, and maybe some different oem style wheels.

Pros: it’s the right price and could be a easy payday if everything goes right.
Cons: it’s a ford, it’s a 2 valve 4.6, could be a nightmare.

Any thoughts?

I've flipped cars before.  I only ever made a huge profit on one vehicle.  Basically, buying vehicles and then getting them to a point where I was satisfied with them would give me something to do and learn along the way. Once I was done with them I would sell them.  More of a hobby then a business plan.

The other turbo/blown 99-04 stangs I find are listed for $9k+. I was thinking budget $1k for incidentals, The car is listed for sale at $5000 right now. That would still leave some opportunity to make some $$$$

I never saw any of those people flipping on tv pay asking price. I don't think many are very good at anything except negotiating as they hire people to do the fixing of what they are flipping.

Not saying you couldn't bank some coin, just that I don't think it is as easy as it appears on the surface.

Waiting for an email back.
If I could make a grand I’d be happy.

You need to make a plan that pays much more than a grand...    Then settle for a grand if that's how it works out.

Personally, a modified car that much is going to be a tough sell, most likely.   Those mods will turn off most potential buyers. Plus, trying to get more money from the mods, limit the people that are left since most people don't have any damn money.

I've got a NICE Durango I bought to flip back in January and looks like I'm going to be stuck with it until tax time next year.

Or you could put it back to stock and sell all the mods!

That's what I did with Buicks for years.. I wouldn't get involved with modified cars.. Nothing but headaches because people will think they all have a warranty  Or get a car that looks awesome but will nickle an dime ya to death.. Making a grand on a car is going no where.. Just my personal opinion of coarse   :chin:

I'm sure someone has made the occasional buck flipping cars but no one I ever knew did

Car is to far to go back to stock. But there are other parts that come with the car that could be sold as well...

Optimistically I think there is more then a grand to be made, I'd have some fun with it (track, dyno, car shows) and it'd fund my project further along after it sold. It is highly modified and would need to be sold to the right person.

two secrets to making money on cars.  Pick the right car and spend the absolute minimum on it before selling it.  No one that I know ever consistently did either.

I’m going into as a coin toss, I haven’t even heard from the owner yet so it might not even have a snowballs chance in hell to happen.

Only if someone goes south and brings them back, or it’s sat for decades. Salt gets everything.
