Steel vs aluminum drums

Had a fella tell me I shouldn't be holding too much boost on the foot brake with aluminum drums. Said they will crack and come apart on me.


I realize boost is relative depending on lots of other variables. Is there a torque number out there to be leary of or is this dude smoking crack?


As I see it, I save 5 lbs a side with the aluminum drums.

I think they will have a shorter life...just how much is the question.

And for whatever reason the guys I know that tried both say you can't build as much boost with aluminum drums. May be or not an issue.

I can understand not having a line lock, getting the brakes hot doing a burn out and then trying to hold the launch causing premature wear but lots of folks foot breaking aluminum drums with 1.5-ish short times. And we've been doing it for a long time. I just haven't heard any stories of them coming apart

I put a set of Kirban's aluminum drums on my T this year, they are nice brand new drums that haven't been through a gazillion heat cycles and up to full spec.......... .if you have the s-10 cylinders and Russell flex line kit along with 2 long shoes you should be golden, provided everything else is in order. I adjust my rears through the knock out in the backing plate on the star adjuster with the wheels ON (lots more leverage with a 50lb wheel on there to feel for drag)

they also have the benefit of moving the tire away from the frame a little.

There's an idiot up in The Great White North that's got about a gazzillion passes on a set of used aluminum drums...zero issues.

I've been using aluminum drums for a long while with no issues. I don't get to the track as often as I like but when I do, I don't heat them drums when doing the burnout.  I use a line lock.


My brakes in the rear are set up as you mention gusszgs minus the Russel line. Braking is superb.


It's official, the dude that told me that is smoking crack. 


By the way, rock auto carries the drums at a lower price then Dennis and with an email coupon code you can get them to your door for less than what Dennis lists them on his site.

Metric wasn't introduced up here till I was well into grade 12...so I'm exempt from it. I'm one of the best at keeping a straight face. I'd fuck the teachers up and ask things like...how many decalitres in a hectare...lol!

The metric version for gas mileage is the stupidest. X amount of litres per 100 kilometres. Seriously...wh at in the blue hell is that all about?!

When I went to school metric was already being taught and we learned Imperial but I don't remember gas being sold by the gallon only liter.
