oil cooler lines

I know most just delete em. But here in Texas where it is hot a pretty big part of the year, id like to keep the cooler.

Any one know the size of the fittings and how much hose I should buy to plumb in a new set? I'm guessing they are 6an but wasn't sure.

It appears one or both have sprung a leak as it is dripping off the middle cross member under the engine. I change the oil/filter last night but didn't get a light out to investigate it.

I've never assembled any an lines but have seen some YouTube vids and it doesn't look that hard. Any tips on that are welcome also.

Measure the originals and buy as needed for length...and follow how it's done on YouTube. As a side note...it gets hotter up here and we have more humidity. Unless you're flat track racing or doing the Bonneville Salt Flats...the cooler isn't needed...and this came from an engineer that designs engines. I blew a line on my 2004 2500...and you should have seen how fast it emptied the pan.

I drive it daily and it was 107* the other day and over 100* the rest of the week. I'm doubting it gets hotter up there.

I don't have them on my car.

You better do something or one of them will blow out of the fitting soon and you will have zero oil.

I think one end is a saginaw fitting...and the other end is a standard fitting as I recall.

During the summer months the jetstream goes into an omega pattern and the heat/humidity gets dragged up here from the Gulf of Mexico. Contrary to popular belief we don't live in igloos up here.

Run a synthetic oil and a long filter, and forget the oil cooler.  That was the only reason that part was installed on the car in the first place: managing the needs of crappy 80s crude-based oil.

One of the fittings is different like its metric or something. Maybe Saginaw fittings are metric. I don't know. I have set of originals if you want them

I have the wix 51036 long filter covered, I run the Quaker state high mile with the zinc in it usually 5w30 or 10w30.
I guess I don't need the cooler. Just thought it a good idea to cool stuff.

Is it worth having this for an line assembly?

There is a 10' section of 10an braided line for $22 or so.
The adapters are 3/4"-16 to 10an
And some 10an fittings.

On the sammich adapter the holes are 1/2"NPT. Going from that to whatever AN size you want will be very easy.

If you're going to an external cooler get one with 1/2" openings and do the same as the sammich adapter for adapters.


Keep in mind the factory radiator cooler takes heat from the oil and puts it in the coolant THEN convects it to the air. That's assuming the coolant is cooler than the oil. If the coolant is warmer than the oil you're factory cooler is actually a heater.


With the temps you're dealing with, I'd run an external cooler and take the heat load off the radiator.

Got the money order - lines shipping today. I did have the o rings, I had installed them on the lines in anticipation of installing them.

Then I decided to delete the cooler. 


And thank you for the shift cable clip! One less detail I don't have to worry about.
