Comp 885 pre-load?

Anyone no what pre-load would be best?  I've heard anywhere from 0 to .020.

Found out it should be at zero when hot.  So pre-load should be anywhere from 0.020-.025 to start.

0.005" was what people used with aluminum heads cold...don't know on iron heads, but, I bet Comp would know :)

they were supposed to be zero preload running as I recall but that is different from what you just posted LOL (because they don't change that much cold to hot...just forget that I posted :D

That would work!  It would be better if I had valve covers that the tops came off though.

I have mine set at .020 with aluminum heads. Nice and quite but mine are what is labeled as short travel lifters. Are these original comps made by Johnsons lifters but solis as Comp's?  Are they standard, reduced or short travel?

Comp sells these as their "High Intensity series".  I don't know who makes them for Comp, but I doubt it is Morel.  Generally they are supposed to be adjusted .002-004" hot which is probably not far from .020" cold on aluminum heads.  These are basically "anti-pump up" lifters due to the near zero preload install.  When over-revved, and they pump up, the valve will be barely off the seat.

They cost a hundred bucks or so more than the regular comp roller.  My gut feeling is that we would not find much difference between the regular and the High Intensity if we took them apart and started measuring.

Remember when we used to install chevy lifters, the factory said tighten one turn from zero but the hot tip was to tighten them a quarter turn from zero for a couple hundred more rpm before float.  I suspect the High Intensity refines this to basically a "hair" past zero (.002-004") for another few rpm.

I asked Billy a couple of years ago if he liked them and he said no.  I did not ask why but I suspect it was a quality issue more than a theory problem.  As he never tries to sell anything, I always respect his opinion

I've often wondered if the only difference was an internal snap ring .vs a circlip.

On that boat engine I set the valves 1/8 turn past 'stop clicking'.  That caused two of the circlips to come out.    When I build this engine in the next week or so I might replace source some internal snap rings for whatever tappets I buy.

I just installed a set of TA hyd rollers,  and  found they have about .070 internal travel,
way more than I thought,  and in order to get them quiet, I had to  add close to 1/2 turn ,
I'm guessing  .020-.030 ?  oil pressure  is super, 60+ cold, and 40+ hot.
if I wanted  more rpm, I'd have used solid rollers,

these were supposed  to be Morel lifters,
I wanted quiet vs hi rpm. beside my cam is all done a 5600 , ( nothing like putting a 7000 rpm lifter on a 5000 rpm cam)

I'll take my stock rockers, pushrods and cheapass over the counter flat tappet cam over all this any day of the week...and twice on Sundays. I need a drink...

My cam is rated for 6K but I have seen .2-.3 in the 1/4 difference from going to 6400 rpm from 5800.  I guess I'll see when I take it to the track how things go.
