Restoration
« on: May 31 2017, 07:50:22 PM »
So I guess I'm just doing a frame up restoration minus messing with my dash because it's perfect and I'm just not going there.

Where is Gary Wells and his opinions when I need him?

I want to roll my fenders but I'm worried. No mods have been done to the body other than the rear seat braces. I don't know if I should do it or not.

Opinions?

Do you like the look of a wide tire? If so roll the fender. Heck, notch the frame. No wait, tub that bitch.

Personally I think there is no need for a tire wide enough that requires the fender to be rolled. I just don't like the looks unless it's on a wagon

How much tire you planning on trying to stuff in there? I've run a my 28x9 slick without mods. How much more "traction" will you be needing?

The title is restoration, that car came from the factory with a 215/65-15 Goodyear on it

Why what steve? Seeking Garys opinion? He's anal when it comes to stuff like rolling fenders. Why am I restoring the top half. Because I want to surprise nosey people. Why do I want want to roll my fenders. Because I like running 275's.

I planning on going back to Cooper Cobra rwl. 225 in front 275 in back. Tub....hell naw  I'd cry. I'm having a hard enough time trying to pull the trigger on rolling the fenders. Frame notch may maybe maybe in maybe in the future, imho, it makes the car better if done properly.

Was referring to fender rolling. Should not be needed unless you run wheels with the wrong offset

Put on a 255/60-15. They fit well and don't need the fenders rolled.

I have ten inch wide stock style rims on the back. Can't remember the offset.. 275/50r15 MT drag radials are cut up and fender trim is is a little distorted where you'd roll the fender. I really think the trim is too wide because it does stick out an eighth inch (or so) past the fender lip.

I've never had 275/60 Coopers back there. 255s are an idea I didn't know they made that size. I'm thinking the 275/60 coopers would be a tighter fit needing to roll.

I ran em in the stock 7"wheels. Not sure with a 10" wheel. That trim might need a "haircut".

LOL - so the 345s work for you, eh?  I cannot wait to put 390s on the back of the Monte. ;)

I doubt it matters much on car value, but, like Jason, I prefer non rolled.

From a traction standpoint going down the strip, the length of the tire foot print is more significant than the width of the footprint at the same sidewall height when comparing adjacent tire sizes in many cases.  That's the reason we see a lot of guys with 255 drag radials pulling such good short times.  They also mph better.

I think most of us go for 275s for looks because we think they make the car look badazz.  Okay, to a certain degree, they do!  LOL

If I were to do it today, I would go for 255's, I think.

In your case, with 10" wheels, you probably need to go 275's to get the tire to fit to the wheel width.  10" wheels may be a bit over the tire specs but Cooper does not seem to offer much guidance.  Nitto shows 9.5" max for their drag radials.  That means rolling the lips.

Otherwise, you need 8" wheels and your choice of 275's or 255's.

You"re kinda in no man's land.  typical hot rodding.

Steve, if we wanted cars for their mechanical (just enough) perfection we'd all be rocking Miatas. ;)

Muscle cars are about needless excess and drastic over-compensation. :D

Did you miss the part about rolling vs non rolling the fender lips?
