Overboosted It
« on: June 19 2016, 09:17:10 PM »
Hadn't changed the headgaskets in my car for a few years...so I thot it was time. In the second round I'm dead even with a 2nd gen big tire Camaro...and the car noses over on the 2-3 shift...WTF!! Save the file and go back to the trailer...and the boost and KR are through the roof...WTF!! As I'm making a Molotov cocktail to burn the POS, I notice the adjustor rod on the turbo is all the way over to the drivers side. I put down the lighter and Molotov cocktail and grab a pair of pliers and pull on the adjustor rod...and it pulls back to the drivers side. Either the weld has partially given way on the puck...or the puck somehow jammed...and then fell off down the DP. I sent Jason a pic from my cell...maybe he can post it. I'm open to suggestions as to what happened to the puck...or arm it's welded too. I had to clean up the  inside of that RJC DP for the biggie puck to swing free when Jason started selling them years ago...so I'm lost as to what happened. We'll find out tomorrow when we pull the engine and get a look inside the DP.

On a good note the car ran 7.31 at 99 on an easy 1.81 launch in shitty air on 22 lbs. Low gear 02's were 820's and high gear 02's were 780's. High gear timing was default and low gear timing 4 degrees over default.

A lot of broken parts does not make you a racer; it makes you a slow learner.

One more reason to have a computer/OS with closed loop correction - might save your HGs in an overboost situation.  Same goes for spark control.

Unfortunately there isn't an OEM system out there that offers this.  The MAFT Pro does somewhat - but, it is purely an aftermarket offering.  I believe there are some boost controllers/alcohol injection systems that can do the same.

If it isn't one thing, its another - eh, Brad?

Damn Son! Blow off valve for any motor raced regularly with expensive parts in it.

It's too hot to race anyway. Just leads to disappointment .

Okay, Dan and I loosened the engine...and we'll pull it tomorrow. The puck is gone...and there's a small chunk of metal on the shaft that won't let it come out of the DP. The DP doesn't want to come out of the test pipe...so we'll spin it out tomorrow after the engine is out...and I'll get a pic of what's left on the shaft. I have a new puck assembly on the way from RJC. Engine oil is clean...so it's head gaskets...and we're back in the game.

What's disheartening is Dan and I just got the new transmission in the car Friday...and now this. I'm having way to much fun playing with these big tire cars to keep me down for to long.

A secondary wastegate on the intake charge pipe would be cheap insurance.  But, having the puck fail (stuck in the exhaust housing?) is a pretty freak situation.

We pulled the engine and put it on a stand...heads and intake come off tomorrow. Head gaskets are 3 days  coming out of Brampton at 77 bucks each. Dan found an intake gasket locally. I sent a pic of whats left of the puck to Jason. He can post it later. Im at a loss to explain how the puck froze...and then broke away. I overboosted an engine a few years back...its on Youtube...Bria n Harper shot it. The vacuum hose between the port and actuator collapsed. How often does that happen. Ive got a new set of valve springs coming from Joe out of Montreal.

Jeremy...the price of parts up here is insane...and are tough to get. 941 valve springs up here...are 240 bucks. Joes sending me Pioneers...cuz he can get them at cost for me. A pair of slicks are over 600 bucks. To be able to race every weekend, I have to nickel and dime everything. If it wasn't for Dan and Joe helping me...then I couldn't do it. My short times aren't the greatest...cuz I can't afford new slicks. I do the best with what I have.
