should I be concerned
« on: January 14 2015, 08:59:00 PM »
This cam has about 5000 miles on it, there appears to be a pit in the metal a couple thou deep. it looks like it skipped over something there are breaks in the wear pattern.
The roller on the lifter looks goods.

I dropped it at the Machinist he was of the opinion run it, he is going to check it for straightness and polish all the journals and lobes.

It looks like one of Comp's low quality cores... and if so it isn't surprising that this damaged occured as the case-hardening doesn't go too deep on those.

Not sure.  I do know that I would go to Cam Motion for any roller cam these days, although a Buick V6 grind would be custom from them.  Shelf grinds are very dangerous for the reason shown above.

Not sure who makes them but fullthrottle sells roller cams.  The one that has peaked my interest is the 210/215

This should help explain the differences in quality available in aftermarket roller cams: http://ls1tech.com/forums/generation-iii-internal-engine/1759417-new-cam-core-comp.html

Larry...let me know what lifters you go with...and how you like them. I have all the parts together to build my 'retirement' engine...but I'm on the fence with which brand of lifter to go with.
