Bore it .010 or .030

Opinions wanted. I have a decision to make. I have the rotating assembly out of the block with the cracked cylinder. I have a standard bore block. One of the .030 over pistons is scrap...was damaged from the crack in the cylinder. Do I purchase a new .030 over piston and have this block bored .030 over for the this rotating assembly...or do I toss the 5 remaining .030 over pistons and order new .010 overs...as I'm positive this block will 'clean' at .010 over.

If you don't mind spending the money, I would probably go +10 so the block could be redone again in 20 years :D

That was my thot. Piston recommendation that can handle 10.90 all day? Think the .030's are TRW's.

I think Mike is selling Diamond pistons and they are good.  We used to go JE for  top end stuff.  Wiseco was good. Probe sells some I think.

TRW are good value for the money and we liked them because the alloy did not expand as much so they could be fit tighter and the rings lasted a long time. They are heavier but if you use the light pin and rebalance, they are good for the money.  No problem for 10.90.

Paul is probably a good up to date source.

yes .010 would be my thought too weisco is the most cost effective the have an office in ontario i talked to them when I was putting together my short block.
Ended up going with used diamonds the TRWs are less but you have to go .030

I did that to my last rebuild which I ended up selling to a friend. They were CP 5 overs from Nick at Arizona GN. I figured that it was better long run to save all the meat I could for a future rebuild.  :cheers:

Not to hijack but is there an available option for 0.005" over pistons?  And are rings easily available for 5tho over and 10 tho over?   I PM'd earl brown on the other board asking what became of his custom piston project but he didn't respond.

Since we run larger than normal ring gaps, a set of 'filt to fit' STD would work fine in a .005" over.

It's also a good money saver as you don't have to pay for boring, just a hone job.

That is what I am thinking.  I will not be building this car for all out racing.

How about ring availability for 0.010" over?  In all my years of owning and following the turbo regals I just mostly skipped over the hardcore buick v6 engine details.  I was more concerned with tuning and enjoying.  And since I knew it wasn't as easy as a chevy or ford I just assumed I would learn about it when I got there.

There's plenty of rings in 3.810" all thickness are covered.
