1st track day with alky
« on: September 26 2013, 12:50:25 PM »
This Sunday will be first chance with alky. Stupid question time. Since I dont have good tires for hook-up should I fill up with gas before track to aid in hook-up or will the added weight be worse for time's? 2nd question, say I get in 15 passes max, will one tank of alky last? It seems as soon as it get to half a tank the low level light flashes or even stays on during acceleration.

Any other advice would be greatly appreciated!!!!

should not be coming on at half tank...you might ask Julio about that

probably will not make much difference whether the gas tank is full or not

Hard to do with those tires but it was still a pretty good run.  The Mustang beat you?

Had you ran your car before without the alky?  Just curious as to what type of gains you seen.  And, what tires where you using?

The Mustang and I only got to go head to head once and yes he beat me, but it was my fault, not the cars, I didnt have any boost built and he pulled about 1.5 car legnths out of the hole and we stayed that way the whole run. His best run of the day was a 13.200.... we both got about 10 passes in and we mostly ran in the 13.4XX times. The cars were very close so I was happy.

Without alky I ran 14.5, with and without I ran same tires, Some 17 inch Kumho Ecsta street radials, treadwear rating of 420 so pretty hard compound.

I think with some real time spent tuning at a track I might be able to get in the 12's on these tires. I guess overall I'm happy but I'm sure others with more knowledge could get alot more out of it.

My reaction times were not great either. best was .167, but most were in the .225 area.

the car was probably a bit rich on the top end and I would guess it was rich in first/second but it might be hard to do much about that without making the traction even worse.  You did pretty well on the short times considering those tires.  The car would be in the 12's with just a bit more traction.  You can figure 1.5 tenths at the finish line for every one tenth in the 60' time

Next time you go, take some fuel out of the 3/4 programming to lower the 02s a bit more.  Eric gives some good suggestions in his instructions.  Be sure you are holding it in third and not letting it shift to OD as well

I was leaving it in OD  :(  I couldnt remember how low was a safe O2 number, all I have is the SM and recall had the 792 at 100MPH. I thought 780 was as low as recommended but I'm kinda a chicken and played it safe as I didnt want to walk home.

Whats a good or expected gain from the 1/8th to the 1/4 in MPH? I was seeing a pretty consistant 20-21 gain.

typical gain is 25%

for 100 1/8  thats 25 mph gain at top
for 80 1/8th the gain should be 20  , 82 would expect 20.5mph
gains over the 25% are due to poor use of the 1/8th mile or an increase in hp at the top end ( boost creep up or leaning out from an AF that was too rich)

that said you could (should) be doing much better as far as ET /MPh (HP) at 24psi

not uncommon with a stock turbo at 24psi on alky to see low 12s (near 12.0s or even 11s)
dutt neck helps ,
lock converter,
a nice restalled converter

with brakes (build more boost ) and better tires (hook that boost) you could expect 1.6 60' times ..that alone would net you a 12 slip

and as far as 02 , the narrowband is hard to really determine an AF from the o2 mv reading , 770-780 is considered the acceptable safe range but theres usually more performance running it lower but at the riskof KR from being lean ,   i used to run mid 700s (740-750)  with no kr and on a higher hp setup have pushed just into the 600s  with the stock o2  770 is meaningless and should be used as a reference point to tune from  , if the car doesnt knock with the o2 reading lower and goes faster than its getting closer to its potential , if it doesnt go faster with less fuel or knocks , then try more fuel watching o2 to be higher

and remember that o2 number includes ALKY ,  its possible to hurt performance with too much alky and have your O2 read ok but not have enough fuel , i run with gain at around mid point , if you have your o2s and still get knock increase alky

It is not the o2 number, it is the NO timing retard that is important.  I would guess 750-760 would probably be close but only you can tune and test to determine that.

As Paul said, on a stock turbo, a big neck converted intercooler should help quite a bit.

So my 1/8-1/4 gain was as it should be. A set of drag tires and a bit leaner watching for 0 knock and next time I should shoot for 12.5 et's. I drive this carso what tires would be good compromise? I try to never drive in the rain anyway but sometimes you dont get a choice.

Nittos last a lot longer than Mickey T's on the street and are a bit better in the rain if you get caught...long as you are not stupid, anyway/

Not as sticky at the strip, tho-harder rubber

Will Nitto's be soft enough to get me 1.6 60ft times?
