stock alternator bearing
« on: July 30 2013, 12:54:08 PM »
My original low mile alternator still looks good and works good, but the pulley bearing is going south.

Anybody replace the bearing in one of these?
I wonder if just the bearing are still available?

it's a standard bearing.   The front one is easy...don't remember if the rear is a bearing or bushing

you can order them here if not found locally...we have the early style cs144 which seems to be different on the rear bearing which it does have

Note to self, scribe case to clock the case on disassembly, paper clip thru the rear housing to hold the brushes in on assembly. Just in case it gets overlooked!!!

Thanks pyro!

steve,  I see the pn for the rear early style cs144, (# 620004N).
but which one is for the front?

Do I just buy the part #544 kit that has the front and rear for the cs144?  That pn doesn't clarify late/early model

I just checked, Steve, those are still good #'s and available. Our store actually stocks the front bearing. They don't have anything else, but they have that bearing.

I need to do some more reading.  I'm contemplating a 140 upgrade.
Steve, I'm trying to think of anything electrical I've added to the car:
ramschargers fans with the relays wire upgrade
fuel hot wire kit
couple aftermarket guages
adding a alky kit.
do you see anyneed for a 140 amp upgrade?

easy way to tell, if you go full throttle and the voltage drops very much, then you don't have enuf alternator.

At idle voltage should be close to 14 and stay above 13.5 under any condition.

That is reading the voltage at the alternator and not on the scan tool.

If your alternator is tired, then you might as well replace it with a 140....basical ly the same price.  the 140 has some minor improvements as it is the second generation CS144

Ir's a '96 Caprice police alternator, and yes, 140A. The smaller 105A Impala unit won't fit.
