Torque Converter recommendations.

I would like to try a new torque converter. I have the stock turbo. The car will chirp the tires going into 2nd gear but i cant get the thing to build boost at the line. Currently, the stall is at like 1600 and a shift kit was installed by the previous owner. Not sure if it is the stock D5 converter. It has some bolt on mods that make it a pretty quick car but has had no major engine work.


What brands and stall speed would you recommend?

that sounds like a converter out of a non turbo drivetrain.

Just buy a 2600-2800 rpm stall converter.  Do not buy one that is rated for 3000 rpm stall as it is not needed plus they are badly inefficient in a 11" converter that slips more than it transfers power.

PTC is known for having well built converters.  2600-2800 will work okay with a stock turbo and is perfect for  something in the range of a 44, or 49 (or whatever the modern equivalents are called)

Easy to check to verify if you've got the factory D5 convertor..... simply drop the transmission convertor shield / cover and you should see D5-D5-D5-D5-D5 stamped all around the circumference of the convertor..... .if its not there or says D7 you know what you don't have installed.

"Pat's" converters work great on a car like yours !!!! low/mid 11 sec cars on up.

Did you every install the 10" PTC 2800 convertor yet?
Did you keep the lock up feature or go with a non-lock up?


Curious to hear your thoughts on the change over after the install.....yo u know "seat of the pants" impression, etc. etc.
