Mouse nest smell from blower
« on: September 01 2012, 09:17:55 PM »
Kinda new to this forum and have a question that I can't find anything further on by the search of this forum. Just a quick bit of background info...My '87 GN has what seems like a mousey smell  (pretty bad, then goes away) when I turn on the A/C or the heater with the blower fan. I have a faint smell with everything shut off. i have searched out the interior and found a small nest starting under the back seat. Got rid of it and replaced the sound deadening material between the seat and the trunk (which is where the nest material came from) I have now as per Steve Woods site taken the top off of the A/C box to reveal the inside with the hope of finding a nest but it's all clear and clean. Now the question...has anyone had this problem and is is possible to get in and build a nest on the underdash area of the heater? Also , how would I got about checking this. I also should say that after the under seat thing I have never found any debris at all in the car or on the rug.
sorry so long and thanks
Paul

How are the drain holes around the bottom of the heater/ac box?

I'll have to check and see. Do you mean with the top off to look down thru the area that would be covered by the screen?
thanks

Hose the intake vent with lysol with the fan on low.

It might take once or twice to kill off whatever science experiment is going on in there.

I have found that the drain flap under the heater/ac box was wide open. have got it closed now seems pretty tightly closed . is the rubber flap available anywhere? while apart i have blown compressed air into the heater ductwork from every direction i can see and dont seem to get any nesting material coming out anywhere, either inside the car or outside in the open heater/ac box. would it be advisable to leave some sort of a freshener in the box before i reinstall the top. maybe like one of those balsam sacks or something like it to deter mice.
thanks

Make sure you like the smell of any mouse retardant you want to use.. :)

If you blew air all through the system, and didn't at least have some shredded bedding come out, you should be good.

Have heard from some people that the new car smell tree air fresheners get their scent from formaldehyde and vermin don't like it.

One in the cabin, one in the trunk a few hung around the garage all full strength for the winter.  I also put out a few bricks of rat poison.

Need to discern the difference between mouse aroma vs mould from stagnant moisture

no, to be sure this does not smell musty or moldy and like i said when i opened up the heat/ac box it was dry and clean in there. the thing that still puzzles me is that even blowing air into everything and even totally up under the dash, i have no signs of ANY nesting material blowing out of anywhere

Do you have a diagram of the duct/vent system?

no i dont. I was just blowing the air into all of the vents thinking if there was a nest in there, some sort of debris, even small pcs would come out somewhere.
I'm pretty sure that point of entry was through the a/c drain flap because it was stuck wide open against the top of the inner fender.
is there such a diagram that would show the duct work and routing

Did you pull the blower motor out and check?

yes sir, i pulled out the blower mtr first to look inside and then according to your instructions on your site for taking the top of the ac box off i did that too and was able to view the entire outside of the ac box.
