dealer mark-up....criminal
« on: April 09 2012, 03:12:00 PM »
I was replacing the front rotors and pads on my daily driver and noticed the left front shock was leaking oil. Called the parts store and they couldnt find replacements. Called the dealership.... ...$499 a shock, $1250 to have them replace both fronts :013: .
Called a different parts store today and they can get them for me for $165 a shock. I now see how GM made record profits last year. They should be ashamed

Why in the heck are you using factory shocks?  Bilstiens are the best commonly available and KYBs are the poor man's choice

Factory replacements, Monroes, etc. are all junk in comparison and don't have any life

I tried a parts store first and they said they couldnt find ANY replacements. Thought dealership was my only option. The second parts store came through, with KYB's actually. :D

KYB's are about $200, or cheaper, for four online.

Does that have the air leveling control and are you eliminating it?

Bah - Cadillac air suspensions are a mess.

I'll bet it has rear air suspension and electronic front chocks.

My 92 Eldo has them - and it's expensive as HELL to replace them.

The newer you get though you have to beat the BCM software to eliminate the shock circuit if you go to just manual shocks. If you don't, just put your favorite picture of the family pet in front of the irritating message display!!!

Even on my 92 Eldo I have the "suspension service" crap come up, been that way since I bought it. I researched it, and GM can't even fix it - people disable the system and put in a relay to stop the annoying message. I have to clear it every time I start the car. Surprisingly - the air suspension in the rear still works. It's noisy - but it works. To really be able to service the pump, lines, seals/etc - I think I have to drop the entire rear subframe.

Only in the past year has the aftermarket come up with a bushing replacement ($40) on the knuckle on a Rendezvous/Aztec/Montana.
Before that it was replace the knuckle at $535 each.
I took it in for a wheel alignment and ended up with an estimate for $3500

No air suspension, they got away from that mess. Lucky for me this is standard spring over shock stuff on mine. The new nightmare now is the magnetic ride control.....ov er $1000 a corner now if you have trouble with them.

Gm isn't that bad but I have friends who work part counters!! Ford on the other hand are criminal for replacement parts. I'll give one of many stories. Last yr was debating on trading in my 08 Fusion for a F 150 truck. My Fusion has aftermarket 18"rims and tires. Well they tell me it's going to cost them $900.00 to replace the tires on my stock rims that I held on to. Cause when trading a car in they want it to be stock looking. Well I still have the car but have a 2011 Silverado!!
I don't care What Congress does as long as they don't do it on the streets and scare the kids!!
