It does amuse me that some Americans view Canada as a socialist welfare state yet we get the same OCCUPY protestors.

While we have the same so called "protestors", Americans have the right to own firearms of different types. I myself own several so called "assult rifles" that are nothing more than a simi-automatic rifle with a higher than 5 round capability.   Try and do that in kanada and see how long you stay out of prison.

We just don't need to be packing to go to the mall up here. Half my family live in the US. They wouldn't THINK of leaving the house without a sidearm.

Charlie, that is why I joined the Army. I get all the full auto weapons I want and the ammo is free. The uniform helped land me some chicks too.

Actually, we don't live in a democracy.  We live in a constitutional republic.  A democracy would not be a good place to live, it's essentially mob rules/flavor of the month. 

And that's why I own guns, right? Because in a democracy we're allowed to?

You (and I) are allowed to owns guns because it's our constitutional right.  In a democracy it would be up to the mob whether or not we would be allowed to own guns.  Just imagine being able to say "lets take a vote" every time a controversial subject came up and think of the consequences for such.
