If you own a gun, you will appreciate this.  If not, you should get one and learn how to use it.

Shooting Advice:
Cops carry guns to protect themselves, not to protect you.



Never let someone or thing that threatens you get inside arm's length and never say "I've got a gun".  If you feel you need to use deadly force for heaven's sake let the first sound they hear be the safety clicking off, and they shouldn't have time to hear anything after that if you are doing your job.

Clint Smith, Director of Thunder Ranch, is a drill instructor (Thunder Ranch is a firearms training facility in Arizona ). Here are a few of his observations on tactics, firearms, self-defense and life as we know it in the civilized world.

funny you posted this....My Parents have retired to PA and now my Dad has guns  both pictures are of my Mother with a Springfield 9MM XD Semi Auto and with a Ruger Semi Auto .22

I suspect the average hand gun fight will be less than 30 ft, but, I have not looked for any stats

thinking real serious about picking up one of those. I like the idea of mixing up the ammo.

get a Bond Arms-then all you have to do is swap barrels if you don't like .410/.45LC

These guns are not tiny derringers and they are extremely well built, but, they kick the Judge's ass

Those are pretty neat, but in a carjacking or getting robbed on the street situation when I'm scared stiff and the adrenaline is pumping... wouldn't it be better to have more than just 2 rounds?  I like the idea of a 410 public defender or s&w 38 that doesn't have a hammer to get caught in your pocket, and is a revolver (less chance of jamming (correct?)   
I was thinking 410 cause itd be nice to have a couple rounds of shot in the mix.  I guess I need to go look at one and hold it and see if its really that big of a gun. 
I've been planning on a 38 for awhile, may just stick with getting one of those, not sure.  I'm not a big gun guy or anything, obviously, lol!  Just own a couple, and like to shoot a couple times a year. 
but now that I have my carry and conceal, I want something when I'm out on the motorcycle, or down in the bad parts of the city

the hammerless .38's are nice....not much thought required with a double action revolver.  Remember that car jackings will occur very up close and personal...kin da hard to miss...hardest part will be having the gun ready to use...and using it.  The most important thing is practice, practice, practice, and more practice.  I would guess most are not prepared for a problem and don't respond adequately

My best advice is to take a class on self defense with a hand gun if you have not, shoot a variety of guns until you find one that you are comfortable with and you feel competent not to kill innocent bystanders with...and then buy one.  I have know many that bought a gun because some one suggested it was what they needed, or they read a magazine review touting its wonders...and then they could not hit anything with it.

Practice might teach you the reflexes needed to hit something with the gun and to remember to take the safety off before trying to squeeze the trigger...mayb e.  Damn right inconvenient to have a 9mm with 17 rounds in it and forget to take it off safety...

a self defense hand gun class would definetly be beneficial for me.  I will look into that.
I'm no stranger to tense situations, but I've never been in a fire fight, or pulled a gun to defend myself.
 
I was carrying a walthers 380ppks.  I think I probably fired around 400 rounds through it, but it did jam a couple times.  thats the biggest reason for wanting to go with a revolver. 
 
I've held a judge before, but haven't seen the public defender.  the public defender is supposed to be smaller/concealable.

It is smaller, maybe concealable on a fat lady.  Usually, the small semis like the ppk get better as they break in...but, nothing beats a revolver.

I think the course would be well worth it.
