When is an external wastegate required?
« on: April 04 2011, 12:15:38 PM »
I am tinkering with the needed parts to get the new GN running, and one of the things it needs is a downpipe.

I saw this over "there"..
http://www.turbobuicks.com/forums/parts-sale/96902-large-list-remaining-v8-swap.html
279 downpipe 3" cottons performance for external wastegate, used
500 rg-45 external wastegate used

Prices are what he paid, not what i would offer.

At what point is an external wastegate required or help? I don't plan on racing much at all (at the track at least)

Car specs are:
PT51
030 bore
202/202 cam
RJC Powerplate
Mototron 06's
Chip from Eric
3" singleshot from Cotton
Airbags
10" converter
'87 GN, 60lb, TA49, THDP, FTP cam, T+ lots o' shit - SOLD
'07 Ford F150 Lariat 2WD, 5.4L 3v - 255k
'20 Kubota BX2380. FEL, 60" deck
'78 IH/Case 184 Lo-Boy
'99 Kawasaki Bayou 400 4x4

You should be able to control boost easily with an internally gated DP with the PT 51 you have. RJC now sells a larger puck to help control boost with the larger turbos. I've run as high as 24 PSI with my 70 and my RJC internally gated DP...with no boost creep. Norbs and I had to do some wastegate porting to achieve this tho.

A lot of broken parts does not make you a racer; it makes you a slow learner.

You'd be correct Steve. I found a pic of Grumpys car with the hood up that ran the 9. It's got an internally gated DP...and I believe he ran a 67...and prolly up around 30 PSI.

OK, Thanks. Aside from looking cool, it's a waste of $$$.

Anyone have a DP for sale? :P

A word to the wise. If you can't find an authentic used THDP...then I highly suggest you buy a 3" DP from RJC. Buy once...not twice...like I did.
