I would stick with the AC Delco brand for ignition modules and coil packs.  Those aftermarket ones do weird shit to a car. Somehow an off brand ignition module found it's way onto my car when it was in someone's "shop" and it caused havoc with my tachometer zeroing out at about 2K RPM.

You can always swap over to a type 2 coil/module setup from fwd 3800 vehicle.

given the high rate of bad perfroming type II's I would stay away from them.  They only have one power feed rather than two which sometimes causes them to break up.

I would use a GM module, but, coils don't seem to be as particular.

If you ohm the old coil, it may be bad, but that module did not look too good to me....may have been the picture

The early ones 87-93 work great. Later units had troubles. I'm talking about the module not coils.
If one is installed with the proper plate and grounded, failures seem to vanish.

Steve's site will tell you how to ohm them out.  I have a coil pack/module tester and it's a handy dandy tool.  It even helped diagnose and get a turbo-t back on the road on powertour this year. It was a good thing I had brought a spate ignition module with me because even the NAPA crew that follows the tour couldn't locate any nearby for the guy.
