The first thing that came to mind was Sarah Palins "crosshairs" map.  But I think the Sherrif of Pima County about summed it up:

In a candid moment at a press conference on Saturday, Dupnik said his state had become ground zero for the sort of political rhetoric that foments violence.

"When you look at unbalanced people, how they respond to the vitriol that comes out of certain mouths about tearing down the government. The anger, the hatred, the bigotry that goes on in this country is getting to be outrageous," Dupnik said. "And unfortunately, Arizona I think has become sort of the capital. We have become the mecca for prejudice and bigotry."

With that remark, ironically, Dupnik has become the target of just the sort of rhetoric he was decrying.

I'm about two paces from flannel-wearing militiaman myself, but shooting innocent people? I place all the blame squarely on the parents.

The inevitable liberal knee jerking begins. Opinion should not be withheld, and first amendment rights should not be infringed upon, due to the the possible reactions of a lunatic fringe. To blame political rhetoric is laughable and disingenuous, but the left wing ideology has always been so. Those wanting to hate will always find reason to do so, and targets will always be readily available. Only a matter of time before the next gun control bill is brought up...sigh.

Sarah Palin and the tea party have seemingly replaced "big oil" and "big business" as the new and disapproved bogeymen of the left. Interesting how EVERYTHING that happens somehow gets blamed on one or both of the two (according to some). I guess Bush has been out of office long enough so that he is immune, though It would not surprise me...

Well, let's not forget how the religious right blamed musicians for Columbine, either. It seems retards can never be labeled as just such.

The religious types blame mankind for everything, for man is a sinner, while the secular progressives blame society for everything. Either way is easier than having to  do the unthinkable, which is to actually do some thinking.

I'm reminded of the old Sacred Reich song, "Who's To Blame".

I don't know if taking away ANYONE'S rights is the answer, but somehow we have to get teachers to stop telling every last little retard who comes through their class that he's special. This freaking idiot Loughner is probably sitting in a cell somewhere even now thingking that he's some sort of visionary dissident.

Sometimes there are no answers. Manufacturing defects can and will occur. Knee-jerking and blaming accomplish nothing, other than the self satisfaction that stems from righteous indignation

Is AZ a state that imposes the death penalty, I wonder?

The thing I notice about all of these religious radicals trying to 'spread the word' is that they are covering up there own mistakes and vices. I've never been one to judge someone on the basis of there religion or lack there of, it doesn't seem like any reason to dislike someone.

The upbringing of these whackjobs should always be in question. I'm not saying its the parents fault, but it should be looked into. If that wacko was molested, beaten, even picked on as a kid it could lead to this if there's no way to confront those demons. When the catholic priest sex scandals started coming out of the woodwork, I wondered how many of these school shootings and other random attack masterminds were victims.

I agree with a previous post. Someone who has that much hatred to go out and kill innocent people needs to be dealt with by old-world justice.

I don't think it's knee-jerk to connect the dots. Some people stir up shit and stand back and wait for some nutcase to work by proxy for them. Disingenuous is their mock outrage when these so-called "patriots" (all the McVeys, the nut who flew his plane into the IRS building et al) actually take the suggestions planted in their minds and carry out these heinous deeds.
If only all the metaphors weren't about guns and shooting people that you disagree with politically.
"Don't retreat, reload!" - Sarah Palin, former Governor of Alaska

"If this Congress keeps going the way it is, people are really looking toward those Second Amendment remedies." - Sharron Angle, former member of the Nevada State Assembly

"If ballots don't work, bullets will." - Joyce Kaufman, Radio host, Tea Party activist

"Sarah Palin has the crosshairs of a gun sight over our district and when people do that, they've gotta realize there are consequences to that action."
- Currently serving Congresswoman from Arizona Gabrielle Giffords

It's hard to monday morning quarterback a act like this. The kid is fucked up and a trigger in his head can go off at any time. It can be politics, against animals or parents or someone looking at him the wrong way. We used to put troubled people in mental hospitals years ago, but it's not politically correct anymore.

That's the bottom line, Ed. But when you get some tea-bagger nut bringing a .308 to a heath care rally...that doesn't seem too fucking rational to me. Just meant to intimidate. We'll wait to see what this kid's political bent was.
But on a happier note.  Glenn Beck's radio show was cancelled in NYC and Philly. Oops. :jerkit;
