Hooray for Subaru!
« on: April 16 2010, 04:39:39 PM »
Sothe wife tells me that her POS Subaru is shaking when she drives it. I have her take me for a ride to verify. Yup, turns out she somehow broke a lug off and the others are loose on the rear driver's side wheel. Despite much grilling, the denials of hitting or curb or something similar persist and I give up and accept that I'm putting a new lug on without a real explaination as to why. Oh well. So, down to Napa I drive, pick up a new lug and proceed to jack and -stand the car. Off comes the wheel, then the calipers. Hmmm, the lugs don't go through the rotors on this car. So, I take the rotor off (real PITA, BTW) and see that the lugs go through a hub flange behind the rotor. Whatev'. Wait- WTF is that? A broken aluminum ring affixed to the rear of this hub flange. Great, so not only do I have to replace the lug, I've got to identify, acquire and replace this ring thingy. Back to Napa. After waiting in line and spending a seeming eternity looking at exploded views on computer screens and in catalogs we determine the part to be the ABS ring. Great, I'll take one please. Nope- dealership only part. So, I load up and head to Albuquerque to seek out a dealership. Once there I'm told that the part is not in stock and will need to be ordered from Denver. We'll call you when it comes in in a few days. Three days later I pick up this lousy little aluminum ring for $92 motherfucking dollars. I'm able to *not* kill anyone by telling myself that at least this ordeal is nearly over and I can stop spending my days being petrified by the fact that lately the wife has been driving my truck. So, I get home, have a seat next to this wretched abortion and refamiliarize myself with the hub. Alright, this hub flange is going to need to come off so that I can screw this ring onto the back. Cool, removal of a 1 1/4" nut and we'll be freeing up the driveaxle. Where's my damned 1 1/4" socket? Dammit- back to Napa. $7. Back home. I remove the nut and voila....nothi ng happens. Shit. For the life of me I can't figure out why this POS hub flange wont just come off. Time to forfeit all pride and go to a Subaru board, admit my ignorance and get an answer. The answer is that the entire hub knuckle needs to be removed. Alright, I ask- and what then? I'll need to 'press' the entire hub assembly apart, attach the ring, replace the bearings and seals and then reassemble the entire mess. Oh, and I'll need a 12 ton press to accomplish this. Even Harbor Freight want $130 for this damned press. SO, we're at nearly $250 thus far over a $1 lug. Fuck you, Subaru.

But - they're so "edgy". :P

The girlfriend's Acura broke down - died in line at school dropping off her offspring. Just died. Sigh. I hate having to work on this thing, I think it might be the fuel pump or ECM of some sort - need to see if it has spark. Schrader valve to check FP? Nope. Cheap Japanese fucks.

I had NOTHING to do with the decision to buy that shitheap and even advised against it. Yet somehow I'm the one who always has to fix it. Hmm.

When Sylvan's wife wanted a new cah, Sylvan said she had to choose at least
two of the three requirements - (Black, Buick, Turbo)

I still have pics and video of him driving it too.  :rofl;

Press it out? Use the Ford wrench. A fucking sledge hammer. God forbid it breaks something though.
My 1958 Mamiya can beat up whatever camera you just wasted your money on.
