Got a question, I helped Bryan rebuilt my transmission before we moved down here, and when it was back in my car it still did not work. It shifts but does not engage 2nd gear. We are debating on just buying a new

That is the problem, we rebuilt it. It is just trying to find the problem now.

Here is the story:

On the way to Dyno Day for the Chicagoland GSCA the car seemed to be shifting funny. I knew something was wrong but I was not sure what. Donna was upset because I would not put the car on the dyno. About twenty miles or so away from the dyno shop we were getting on I-88 and I got on it hard. When it shifted to second gear, there was nothing. It just revved. I let off the throttle and I was travelling fast enough that the cat shifted to third and then fourth without issue. I drove it home and I would just hold it in first and build up enough speed so that when I put it in drive it would shift to third and then fourth. Everything but second seemed fine, even converter lockup. Well, the trans has 118k on it, so it was time to freshen it up.

Upon disassembly I found the second gear band was pretty well toast and the direct clutch drum was a nice shade of blue. I took a trip to Napa and bought a new filter and gasket. I then ordered a Deluxe Rebuild Kit and a Valve Body Kit from PTS Xtreme Transmissions. I ordered a rebuilt Direct Clutch Drum and a Hardened Stator Support from Performance Automotive & Transmission center. Lastly, I bought a Super Servo from Superior Transmission Parts.

Nothing in the trans looked out of the ordinary. I rebuilt the trans and everything went smoothly. After getting the trans back in the car, the problem was still there.

I asked Staged 1 and Tweeked6 to provide some assistance. Both of them have rebuilt their GN trannys and are ASE certified mechanics. First go round Tweeked6 and I went back through the trans ans found no issues. We proceeded to air check all of the circuits and everything seemed to function as it should. The trans went back in and the problem was still there. Then we tried to shim the servo to provide a little more pressure. That did not change anything either. Tweeked6 and I then asked Staged 1 to give us a hand as Staged 1 is much more experienced with trannys than Tweeked6. We went through the same things again. We double and triple checked everything and it all seemed correct. When the trans was installed again, we had the same results. No second gear.

I have even consulted Len and checked what he recommended. This thing is kicking my butt!

The only thing I can think of is that maybe the "rebuilt" Direct Clutch Drum has been cut too much?

Any thoughts or ideas would be helpful. Eventually i am going to have to crawl under the car again.

hmm, what band did you use?

Was the drum modified for extra clutches and steels, and got the stock amount ?
Any valve body modifications ? Ie: mis drilled holes in the separator plate, missing or mis placed check balls ?

Standard number of clutches and steels and a non-modified drum.

The valve body kit came with a new seperator plate and such. Some check balls were eliminated, I have double and triple checked the number and location of the check balls each time the trans is apart.

The band was an Alto but not the wide one, as the drum was not machined for the wide band.

you don't have to get the drum machined for the wide band. But, if you think that your drum is suspected to being bad ... you can get a new drum for Dacco. http://www.daccoinc.com/contact/findstore.aspx

They have stores nation wide and several are in Tenn. They primarily supply tranny shops with hard and soft parts. Last drum I bought was several years ago and it was only like $45 or so.  The Alto Red Eagle Wide band was like $38. I am sure prices have gone up in a couple of years but hopefully not too much.
