·Jul 26, 2005My Father passed away in March. He was a Pearl Harbor survivor and was on the only destroyer that got fired up and was
able to shoot down enemy aircraft. He never talked about the war until
his kids were adults. My father was a chief in fire control and served
with Admiral Zumwalt a green Lieutenant just out of military school. His
ship the USS Phelps earned 12 battle starrs. The most decorated war
ship in the Pacific fleet. They were in the Battles at Pearl Harbor,
Midway, Coral sea, Guadalcanal, Talagi, Solomon Islands, Attu,Gilbert
Islands,Marshall islands,Palau, Saipan and a few other I can't remember.
He was going to get out in 1946 to marry my mother but they called him
back for a top secret mission. He joined the USS Brownson for operation
high jump. They when to the South Pole and did secret testing of nuclear
warheads and ammo to be used against Russia. The media back then
thought they were looking for flying saucers and a secret German base.
My father had many cool stories and was a character. He got disgusted
when he seen or read all the desistement about our troops. WW2 vets were
and still are a rare breed that will never be seen again. :usa:

A lot of broken parts does not make you a racer; it makes you a slow learner.
