discussion on copper gaskets

I see people claiming to make various gaskets from copper stock. I can't think of any flange on a car that supports a large enough bolt to exert forces that crush a piece of copper. If a very soft copper "gasket" has an embossed/debossed area I could see that flattening to create a seal but otherwise....

That is pretty much it.  GM MLS exhaust gaskets are embossed for sealing and do a great job.  So, a single layer copper gasket without embossing is going to be hit or miss on its effectiveness. The stock thin 80s flanges are junk.

This is why I have moved to v-bands.  I just put the whole exhaust back on the wagon in under an hour yesterday - leak free.

I've had pretty good success with Copper turbo and header gaskets on the TR
