Somebody pulled out the standard and put in the wells or it was late Friday close to the end of shift at the warehouse....

Installed this Wells unit yesterday...an d the external tach works for those taking notes. I run an Autometer tach. I've read the VDO's don't.

Some of the VDO tachs did not work with factory modules.  I think it was the smaller series.  They did not recognize the DI waveform, but there was some adapter available for them.
