My 1987 Turbo T Build Thread
« on: January 24 2014, 09:24:50 PM »
Hello all! So as some of you may know I am moving to japan on orders from the air force. I wanted to get some major boosting in my system before I went because I don’t know when I’ll be back. I know I know some of you are saying “well why don’t you bring it with you?” well let’s just say that’s out the question for a few reasons. Well back to the story at hand. I want to do a lot of upgrades to my car and then when I am finished me and my dad (supersix) will head to the strip and have some “father son bonding” lol. The current upgrade list is as follows:

Pt-51 turbo
Rebuilt transmission with upgraded internals
Vigilante 2800 torque converter
60# injectors
Comp 980-12 valve springs
Rear control arm bushings
Box the lower control arms
Bilstein rear Shocks
Air bags
Nitto nt555r 275/60-15
Moog Rear springs

So that’s the list and I plan/hope to get that all done in a week or so, with some help of course. Grant it I am still a novice and I am learning. The actual build will start around the second week of March with the hopefulness that my dad and I can hit the track for test n tune. I am very excited about this and can’t wait. I hope that you guys can give me advice and help me through this awesome build.

First question and I know that it’s probably a dumb one because I think I already know the answer but will I need a new turbotweak chip?

Second question: Can you please go through my upgrade list and tell me if there’s anything I am missing/need?

Third question: what do you think i will run?

If you can afford it I'd get a Eric to burn a chip for your EXACT combination... and be very specific about your max boost pressure you tell him...cuz that's what he sets your 02's for. You can manually lock your convertor...or have Eric do it for you in 3rd gear at WOT for racing purposes. When I ran a LU convertor I had him do it for me. I don't see alky or PL on your list.

yes, your right there isnt either of those. i really really want to invest in those if the funds were right but especially after tires and the tranny rebuild i just cant afford it right now. so eric is over at turbotweak? what do you think the max psi should be around? and ill have him lock it in 3rd.

I personally dont care about ride quality, or wet traction as i wont be driving crazy in the rain. i am 50/50 on these or the nitto555r's. i like the MTs more because of the obvious dry traction. price difference is 60$ a piece, with the MTs more expensive.

thoughts?

I assume you have stock heads...so you won't be able to squeeze the max from that turbo. I'd prolly tell Eric 25 PSI...and then you can add or subtract fuel. I'd look for a pair of used 28x9 MT slicks or 28" MT DR's. Both will fit on the stock GN rim and clear the frame and wheel lip. Makes the car look stock...and the guy in the opposite lane hasn't got a clue what's about to happen to him. If you can afford new DR's...go for it.

Alky's cheap compared to race gas.
