unpressurized coolant system?

Can someone tell me why a radiator/coolant system is pressurized?   the reason i ask is my radiator cap has been missing for god knows how long....coolan t level looks a hair low.... doesn't leak or run hot(i have a decent gauge)...so it has me wondering why systems are pressurized.th anks

It's pressurized to reduce boil over. Pressurizing the coolant system raises the boiling point of the coolant, so it can move heat over 212 degrees, also so no steam is created.
