Plastigage still good for checking clearances?
« on: July 12 2011, 10:06:04 AM »
I am about 99% sure I am pulling the balance of the motor that's left in the car. I can't have any faith in anything regarding the mechanics of this car and drive without worrying about it.

Is Platigage still a viable method to check bearing clearances? What else should I check once the block and heads are out?

I think it has an RJC head gasket kit on it, so I haven't pulled the heads yet. Can they be re-used?

It's a used motor. Pull a cap and if it looks good then don't worry about it. If copper is showing or bad gouging then tear it down. Let the machine shop worry about clearances.

If you are going to pull the heads, I would not reuse the gaskets

Would you reuse Cometic head gaskets?

in theory, they can be used.  As there is nowhere around here that can mill the block and heads smooth enuf to meet Cometic's specs...and given the amount of problems that some have with them, it would not be a problem for me because I would not use them
