See.. that's the thing. I have tinkered with and owned a TR for ~10 or so years, and aside from niggling issues due to age, modification, etc - they have all been very reliable cars.

But some can never seem to get theirs right.

Is the car inherently a POS? Do people just tolerate them because they are fast and uber cool?

the car was inherently great....but, many bought them that were not car guys after they became really popular and mistreated them badly,

I bought one from California that had 168,000 miles on it from an original owner who was a mechanic.  He had just put a timing chain and new turbo on it....that was the main work that had been done to it.  I sold it to a guy that took took it to the strip and ran some 12's with it...he sold it at 215,000 and it was still running strong.

Back to Zap's post.  Compared to buying a rusted out original and trying to rebuild it to last another twenty years, these bodies are pretty damn good deals in many cases.  See what an old Camaro, etc goes for that is fixable condition and then compare the cost of new sheet metal and labor to make it solid...not a bad deal at all

Nope...try fixing up some old sheetmetal sometime, and you'll see it's a pretty damned good bargain, like Steve says. Body work is a real bitch for most of us.

110,000 miles, got 22mpg on the last 700 mile trip
things I have changed in 23 years:

brake pads, shoes
exhaust
gas tank
injectors cleaned once
battery
accumulator ball
brake pressure switch
brake lines
burnt bulbs

That's it!
Starting some body work now

i got mine almost 10 years ago.. and i have to say. it rarely gave me a problem. it has a sketchy history too.

besides the heat not working (shut up paul)
its been pretty good to me.
in the past 9 years i replaced:
rad.
turbo
MAF

then the basic maintenance bullshit.

and i guess you can put a motor in there too.. mine was still running (dont know how) when it was pulled. but i personally put over 80 passes on it, drove the shit out of it.

now.. the expensive stuff.. damn body work... and alot of it.
