He doesn't have the ear to even know what sounds right yet... Listening to music and playing it sounds two different ways...

stay under cheap fender... not the piggy back ones but a small 8 inch speaker fender amp will be fine with the fender sqiar

S6, don't let these bozos bully you into a Fender....any amp that is cheap is going to sound decent at best. And Fenders are only sometimes that big of a deal, anyways. Amp sound relies more on the speakers than the make. ANYTHING with a set of 12" Celestion G12T-100's will tear shit UP.....whether it's a Randall RG200G2 or a Marshall VS80. But that's bigger than you're looking for right now. I've had countless friends who got excited about guitar and bought up a bunch of stuff initially..... but statistically speaking, your stuff with be on ebay soon.

Even something as simple as a Peavy Bandit 65. I've had one for years and it still works fine.

I blew up my first "practice amp because I had to crank it to get good sound from it.
After that I got a Kustom 60 watt head that was covered in blue metal flake
foam padding. That thing cranked ! When that blew because of a speaker shorting out, I bought the Peavy.

Anyways, whatever you get, get an amp with a headphone output jack, so you can rock out in your undies at 2am. I will say whatever amp you buy, make sure it's not a Crate. And as much as I hate to say this, an amp with built in effects will come in handy. When you start becoming a tone junky, then you can build your army of stomp boxes and/or processors (  :jerkit;  )

But Sylvan made a good point, it's like booze. You get what you pay for. And when you just start drinking, it all tastes like shit anyways.
