wtb 86/87 rad hold down plate
« on: September 21 2011, 08:25:34 AM »
I'm gonna powder coat it, so finish doesn't need to be nice.  no dents, bends, or other than stock holes drilled.  also need the 2 fan bolts and washer/nuts that screw into the side of it.

thanks

Problem #2 is if you start powder coating (powercoating if yer doin' red rims) you pretty much need to gear up for sandblasting too.

Yeah - that's the suck part. I would need a new compressor for that. i have a ~8 year old 20gal oilless Craftsman.. Nowhere near the CFM I need for blasting.

Aboot 40 CFM is the start point unless you are gonna have a little hand unit inside a bin and 20 will get you there for small jobs if you do not mind waiting for the air.

And then different media use different pressure and feed. Oh and if you use carborundum it burns the crap outta the tips and fast. But it also cuts fast and nice and cast and thick steel. Nice clean finish too. Needless to say do not use it or sand on parts that have bearings etc that do not come out . . .

I was looking at soda blasters, cheap from Harbor Freight. They need like 8-11CFM @ 90PSI, that's a somewhat beefy compressor, ~$500.00 +

Northern Tool has some decent IR for about that, can't justify it right now. i need a welder first.

Do not know what Harbor Freight carries if it is a hopper with a pickup hose and nozzle those work for small parts (fasteners. sleeves, small parts, or for cleaning a weld).

But anything more than that you should save your money for a bigger unit. I have burned up more nozzles than you can shack a stick at and they get pricey after awhile ~250.00 a pop. But if you are gonna go some serious blasting it pays for itself fast.

There are some small tank style hoppers that you fill from the top and then pressurize them, they work well only issue with them is if you use anything other than soda it will eat the brass valve and nozzle up like candy . . . Ask me how I know. THEY do work nice if you do not mind replacing the nozzle and feed valve after a few tanks of hard abrasives.

Anyway I have side tracked this thread and did not mean to.

I am fortunate to have a fairly large oven and powder coater at work.
we got it several years ago  to do misc. ground support equipment around the hangar.   theres not really anything we can legally powdercoat on a aircraft except maybe a interior item here and there (say like a trash can lid).
jus got through doing my gas tank straps and rear control arms. i boxedthem with the hr parts kit. I should do a progress thread on my 84.  shoulda sold this thing when I had the chance, lol!
