Fires
« on: April 17 2011, 03:01:24 PM »
Damn, wind and fire is a bad combination.

San Angelo, 45 miles NW of me has come very close to evacuation orders a couple of times in the past week as wind has pushed the fire right up to the edge of the city.  Fortunately, the wind has changed a couple of times and moved it in another direction.  Friday, we had about half mile visibility from the smoke being blown in.  San Angelo, itself, is covered in ash.

I think they said yesterday that more than 135,000 acres had burned.

Other fires going as well in the area.  Had six here in this country after lightning strikes at the beginning of the week.  More up north around Abilene and Lubbock.

Between our fires and the tornados across the south, this has not been a good week.

*About* a week or so ago, I was passing through on I-20 and I saw a massive amount of smoke somewhere around Midland/Big Spring/Abilene. I can't remember exactly where, but it was big enough so that from the time I first saw it to the time I was out of view must've been about an hour.

So its not been "eden".
bad jokes aside-
Isn't there enough open land to make firebreaks?
or are the winds that strong?

Brush fires wait for no man. If you've ever seen one start, the wind can push them along faster than you can run.

On average, 9,500 forest fires burn more than 3 million hectares (7.5 million acres) of Canadian forests annually.

Suspect we don't see the same winds tho.

30-45 mile per hour winds

At least one fire fighter dead..another badly burned.

yes, there was a big fire around Midland as well...and another around Ft Davis that burned into the town.

Angelo has about 92,000 population..wh en you start telling people they might have to evacuate, people get scared fast.

Few weeks ago, a little town south of Angelo was loading its citizens on buses when the wind shifted and it stopped just outside of town....

Some fires outside of Dallas as well....

Is that San Angelo you are talking about? If it was the Goodyear race track plant is there, Bryan wanted to relocate there when he was working @ Goodyear but they did not have any position their for him.

You got it...too bad he did not move here because it would have been great not to be the only buicks within 100 miles :D    It would be a heckuva change from where you are, or where you came from, tho.

at the moment, they say the main fire is 10% contained after fighting it for almost a week.   Supposed to hit 100 degs today, windy, and low humidity.

Strange to see pics of planes waterbombing a fire in TX

I heard they've charged a homless man with (accidentally) starting a fire near Austin.
