I say we take it further, If you want to be a US citizen, not only do you have to be proficient in the language, you have to serve in the military.

We already have immigration laws - it seems that the lawMAKERS don't want to follow them though.

If the US did that to the rest of the world in the 1800's none of us would be here today. My Italian grandmother came over 1900 and died in the 1960's and the only english she spoke was food related. Problem is the undocumented visitors and not paying taxes.

it is strange that the U.S. is moving toward socialism, government controlled economy, multi culturalism, etc when much of Europe went that way in the '50s and '60's, and then saw what a total cock up it was and started to move away from the idea as they destroyed their economies.  The few that hung on to the idea are now bankrupt and desperate.

So now, we decide we need to follow their footsteps and go down the path to ruin ourselves instead of learning from recent history.

I don't even like the term ESL.  English should be the first language, not a second language in this country.  It was bad when the idiots wanted to adopt ebonics....

Now, we see the English, Germans, and French all decrying multiculturism as they watch their national identities going down the drain.  In the '60s we all made fun of that idiot DeGaulle trying to remove English from the French language.  Maybe, he was just ahead of his time.

I believe we should take it a step further and force those in our country who speak with an accent to shed it. You hear me, Everyone Down South? You sound like damned fools. 'Course, I grew up in the country's largest dialect region.

Well, you are right - but times and things have changed.

The melting pot is closed, and if you can't be bothered NOW to at LEAST learn the language, you aren't welcome.

The days of hard working immigrants coming here are long gone.

You have the mexicans sneeking across the border and draining our enconomy confused with true legal immigration. I just ate at a new peruvian restaurant that all the workers are new to this country. They speak good english and spell better then most on this board   Here in NYC you can intermingle with 100 different nationalities on a given day and 90% can speak english and work hard. If you go to the local Home Depot or Lowes you will see the illegals looking for tax free daywork. Then they go to our hospital for free surgery to sew there arms back on or send the girlfriends to pop out new citizens. This is the problem.
