Personally, I'd just buy a new car, but some people like old junk Buicks and shit like that.
At least for the purchase price we get ALL of the problems in one complete package.

See.. that's the thing. I have tinkered with and owned a TR for ~10 or so years, and aside from niggling issues due to age, modification, etc - they have all been very reliable cars.But some can never seem to get theirs right.Is the car inherently a POS?

You might want to change the oil and filter, maybe the tires to if there is anything left of them.
