Well Monday Tool came to cleveland and I went to see them and it fucking rocked. Inspired me to finally go out and get a guitar and learn to play. So I have a good friend who is good on the guitar and he took me up to the local Guitar Center to pick out a axe. So they have a deal going where you dont have to pay for a full year on the purchase, ok so heres a gimmick to make me want to buy something more expensive. I ended up picking up a Epiphone Les Paul custom. Came to 500 bucks little more then I wanted to spend but at least I wont have to upgrade. I have been getting lessons from my friend everyday and am making some progress. You guys have any advice for me? I know you guys are guitar afficionados, give me some advice on the best ways to learn or some good songs to learn on,

Wear the guitar. When I was learning, I wore it around the house, sat with it, layed with it. It gets you used to where everything is on the neck, body, etc.
Learn to tune and hear what it sounds like out of tune, it'll develop your ear.
And loosen up your hand. Everyone has a death grip on the pick to start with. The up stroek is just as importrant as the downstroke, like masturbating.

Lol blew god dman beer all over my computer when i read that. Yeah my upstroke is kind of rough (on the guitar not my cock with that im the fuckin man). I have just been practicing simple power chords over and over to work on my speed and precision.

i just sold my washburn bass, think its time to pick up a b.c rich beast

Guys check out this ebay ad. Some dude in china is selling a zakk wylde epiphone for 28 bucks US. Should I get it just to see if it is the real deal? Only 28 dollars I mean worth a shot.
-
Hmm... Link bro?
-
dont get it
My advice.... repetition.. play the chords over and over and over again
-
Guys check out this ebay ad.
-
Yeah i messaged the seller and with the shipping it comes to 403 US. which is still a deal if it is real but i dont want to find out. Paypal does have buyer protection if the item isnt what is described but seems like too much of a hassle to go through.
-
thats not a deal at all... its an Epiphone...
-
Yeah i know but the epiphone zakk wyldes are 800 bucks

Pay-Pal and eBay will tell you they have buyer protection and
non paying bidder protection, but thats a bunch of BS. I sold some decals to a guy who never paid, and I waited 2 weeks before I reported it. eBay's policy is to report it within 30 days.So I was well within their guidelines. Still after another 2 weeks, I didn't hear from eBay. When I wrote them again, they claimed that I didn't report it
in time, and I got stuck paying all the fees for something I never sold. I was pissed.
Bottom line is: Beware ! However, they are excellent when it comes to handling
"phishing" and other scams.

I've heard that the Epiphone Les Pauls are very playable and (if equipped with the right stock pickups) have a pretty good sound. I think you got a decent deal, bro. As Brian said, you've got to eat, breathe and shit guitar if you want to get really good at it. A bit of advice: practice on things that you know are out of your league....even if you don't end up nailing it, you'll be a better player gor your efforts. Many years ago I couldn't understand why, even though I played for hours a day, I had been on a plateau for seemingly forever.....*playing* doesn't necessarily make you better, *practicing* things that are difficult does.

I think I found Vince Lambardi!!!!!! Thats something he would say.
-
Paul Stanley plays with Les Paul and also has sold some with his signature on it.... :yawinkle: Sorry, I thought I would just throw my Pauly's name in there....it has been a while since I have mentioned him........lol
-
I have just been practicing songs that I know, easier because i know the beat and how it sounds. Not too worried about how the stock pickups sound as of now but may geet some EMG pick ups down the road.
-
Back in the day Epiphone's were horrible, but the latest I've seen are top notch. Same with Fender's Squier series, they're getting much better.
And Sylvan's right about challenging yourself, I still try playing along to Miles Davis to piss myself off. The Bitches Brew album will make you pull your hair out.
Another quick way to learn is to find people to play with who can put up with you sucking at first. It's a quick way to learn rhythym.

UGH, I was having a great day till I read that post.

I have a couple of strats, I use boomer strings for that blues sound. Crap I haven't played in YEARS...

My Strats sound like pianos with those damn strings.
'Optimal for detuning' my ass.
I still wanna build a custom Fender Jazzmaster.

I use D'Addario XL's 10's on my Charvel, and 009's on the rest.
I've tried nearly every brand out there, and I stayed with these
because they don't rust as fast. My hands have a tendency to sweat
more acidic than most lowering the life of my guitar strings. The
D'Addarios seem to have a higher nickel content that's resistant to it.

use 09 or 10 becuase you dont have enough hand and finger strength yet...
-
This may sound funny, but when I started playing I would sit and watch TV and play the theme songs and commercial jingles. They are simple and easy to pick up with the ear and provides good ear training and quick satisfaction.

No, I play the bass for that.
Ummm, lets see. What does Phil do for finger strength ?
:jerkit;
Ah ha ! The tweezer cramp must be a bitch though.

Actually, I used to do that alot. I used to play some of them during gigs
as background while our singer was talking to the crowd. On occasion the
whole band would play a TV theme song in the middle of a set or during sound check. It was great for a tension breaker, or just plain fun.

Paul Stanley plays with Les Paul
1. I knew Paul Stanley was a fag, but I don't think Les Play would be down with 'playing with him'. 2. Paul Stanley is currently an endorser for some shitfuck guitar company called Silvertone/Silversomething orfucking other....some people will say anything for a dollar.
And if'n you're not playin' Dean Markley Blue Steels (11's) they may as well be shoelaces.
-
I am sorry, he used to endorse the Les Paul.......he is now endorsing Washburn
I do not know which is guitar is good, which is bad, because I have never played one before.... I just think these are cool looking and different...
