Title: starter question
Post by: Shimy87 on July 18 2014, 05:21:34 PM
Another stupid question from me. I have a brand new battery in car. Alt is showing 14 volts on sm when car is running. It barely turns over fast enough to start? I thought starters either worked or didnt. Is the starter going bad and weak or is this something else? Thanks!!!

While yer under there check to make sure the heat shield is there. If it hasn't got one...get one.

How old are the cables? Might be corroded up under that sheathing. It was amazing what a custom built welding cable did for my big block suburban.

The actual connectors can lose their conductivity as well.  I remember on my old top post battery in my Toyota, I kept wire brushing the posts and connectors then smearing on some dielectric grease, still nothing.  Then a mechanic at work was telling me of a phenomenon especially on top posts where they can lose their conductivity from the battery gases and other crap.  Sure enough put new ends on and never had a problem starting again.  Weird or what?
