hi all just wondering what would cause my fuel level gauge read beyond full when the car is running but with motor off key on it reads what I think the level of fuel is?
-
all of my cars have done that at one time or the other. You might try pulling the gauge out and cleaning the terminal posts to see if that helps. One of mine is doing it badly after filling up but it reads right after it comes down a bit

I pulled my sending unit out and lightly cleaned the contacts on the potentiometer with some white scotch Brite and that put my fuel level indication back to accurate. but that was just my particular case. may or may not be the problem you have
-
First - check/clean the contacts on the rear of the instrument panel. The fuel gauge traces and connections are less prone to oxidation than the other circuits, but it's still the first thing to check.
If that doesn't help, drop the tank and burnish the sender as indicated above.

And if you really want to increase the response time, solder a ground lead from the float arm to the hanger body.
I can damn near see fuel slosh with my gauge.

We call that a Ground Circuit Fault Eliminator/Inertial Dampner. GCFE/ID
