Title: always ask
Post by: TexasT on June 13 2014, 07:44:45 PM
So, my mil had a car that came with the orange gm gasket death coolant. The car developed an over heating condition, so she took it to see about repair. $800 to replace the intake gaskets. One must pretty much strip the top and accessories off to get the intake off so I guess I understand the estimate. Everyone has to make a living. So, anyway this was about 3 yrs ago. She bought a new car and parked this one. Fast forward, my daughter was "given"this car. My son took on the task of r&r all that needed off and replace the gaskets. My way of getting him to know he doesn't want to wrench on cars for a living and keep going to HVAC school.

A couple things we learned along the way. The bolts that hold the manifold on are tty. So if I would have known that I would have gotten them in the kit. When the gasket set I ordered arrives it was on the package that the bolts are tty and needed to be replaced. So, back to the intrrwebz to order the bolts.

Next snafu came after he reassembled  and the fuel line leaked like a sieve. I'm not sure where the oring went(he claimed there wasn't one), but we needed one. On to the intrrwebz to research. Found several  kits and went to my local oreily  site. Found a local store with the kit and stopped by after work yesterday. The counter man let me see the kit and compare it to his oring assortment. I measured up two of each. Why was funny to me was the bwd box contained an acdelco bag with two orings in it. Asking price you say? $20.55
The four orings I bought, $.59 ea.
