David Vizard writes some of the best tech articles that I have read-mainly because he is an engineer and has been, if not still is, an engineering prof. He actually has credentials and does it for a business for Nascar and others in his own shop.
I noticed that he was backing Oil Extreme which he normally does not do (backing a product) and started reading some stuff on Speed Talk which led me to the Oil Extreme site and back to this interview on Speed Talk.

His comments about zddp fall into line with those of other professionals that I have read....one thing for sure, buying a professionally blended oil with the zddp level you want from an oil company has to be better than adding it as a supplement but I am wondering if it is time to move on after reading some of the stuff about Oil Extreme from a couple of independent wear testers.
I don't know what Oil Extreme costs either as an additive or an oil but it looks interesting to me.

Yeah, I don't buy the hype... everything regarding oil should be taken with a grain of salt mixed with a healthy dose of common sense.

yeah, there is that guy 540rat that does his own testing over there and a group of guys that cannot stand his testing! :)
Over the years, David is the only guy that I have found that can back up his theories and tests and I have not seen anyone been able to prove his results wrong. He is not always very popular with vendors but his work seems solid...or no one is willing to spend the money to prove him wrong.
This stuff looks like snake oil but oil companies and car companies have been calling bs on the zddp claims for a long time. I definitely believe that too much in the oil causes an additive break down and acid problems in the oil

Not sure his list is the only list because there are so many parameters involved, but, it is interesting
I continue to use Valvoline VR. I might use less if I were to get under the car, clean it off, and fix the oil leaks

You should see what my oil catch can collects! :O
I am going with Castrol Edge 5w50 on the next change, a little runnier at cold start with some zinc added... now to find the time to give a crap to change out the year old (VR-1 20w50) oil that has less than a 1000kms on it. Yeah, it sad that I don't drive the car much anymore.

that would probably be a good choice for me in the GN which is "looser" but 20-50 is not so hot in cold weather but is good in hot weather

Well since this oil is going to be in the car when it gets "pushed" outside from time-to-time in the Winter in order to make room at certain points for work on the new car it is probably best to have a good cold weather oil in the crankcase.
I am running Royal Purple 15w40 in my new John Deere with a twin cylinder Briggs & Stratton. The lawn mower and powerwasher both have Castrol Edge 0w30 in their single cylinder B&Ss - it might be a bit thin; the Techumseh in our snowblower has the same. As does the TBSS and Camaro for that matter.

I ran Royal Purple for awhile in the GN but went back to VR as I did not think I was seeing anything special. Used up the RP in my windmill stuffing box...:D Sometimes I think Red Line might be better than RP but it is really hard to nail down small differences without serious testing.
