Hey Natty, Rob- what have y'all been noodlin' onlately? I got the instructional DVD "Speed Kills" with Michael Angleo Batio and I can't tell you how much help it is to WATCH him play like that. It's helped me a lot. I've never taken lessons in my life, but recently started with a classical instructor to improve my fretboard vocabulary.... but I told him, "I really want to know my way around the fretboard better....but the first time I hear you start talking about phrygian/mixolydian ANYTHING, I'm outta here".
-
....and I'm still dying beside the mailbox waiting for my new issue of Guitar One. I've been told that Buckethead is featured and even gives a lesson! (It's about freakin' time!)
-
I still don't know chords! I know where E and Am and all those, but get me into theory and complex chords outside of majors and minors, I don't know shit! I taught myself too, and I'm glad because I don't sound like anyone else.

I'm in the same boat, man. I don't want to learn how to approach music as a science, I never have. That's why I refuse to allow this guy to talk theory AT ALL. But sometimes just seeing someone do something other than what you're used to is helpful. For instance, I got the abovementioned DVD and had never attempted seep picking before and in just a couple of weeks I'm doing it better than I had thought I'd ever be able to. And my first session with this guy was last Wednesday and he showed me a scale that moves in a different way than I usually play and it was like I was playing guitar with new hands or something.

OK, I give, who the fuck is buckethead?
(Am I too old for this?)

He's the greatest guitarist who ever lived, IMO. In that other thread you were talking about soulful vs. technical playing.....ch eck this song out after the 2 muinute mark. I think you'll find both.

I've got a good .pdf file of guitar chords if anyone wants it. It's called the Ultimate Guitar Chord Chart 2. I got it off the internet a year or two ago, so you might have it already. I'm not sure how to get it to you, but I can email it to you. Just send me your address to pa17702@verizon.net if you want to check it out.
-
Sweet! I'll hit you up right now!

I've never seen a better chord chart. It will make you wanna pick up the guitar instantly. Brian, forward it to these guys, since they know you. If anyone shoots me an email I'll sent it out too.

Don't let modal descriptions confuse you. Its not that complicated.
Don't close your mind to theory either. That can really help your understanding
of tonal relationships.
Heres a quick modal breakdown:
Aeolian 1st scale (natural minor)
Locrian 2nd scale (starts on the second note of the aeolian)
Ionian 3rd scale (relative major)
Dorian 4th scale
Phrygian 5th scale
Lydian 6th scale
Mixolydian 7th scale
All of these modes / scales contain the exact same eight notes. The
only difference being the notes that you start playing from. Once you've
learned your basic minor and major scales, and then the patterns of
these modes, it becomes very simple. You don't necessarily have to
know the name of the mode, but rather its pattern and relationship
to the key of the song you're working with.

Blah, blah blah---I'm not listening to you---blah, blah, blah.
-
sun dog rules. There's like eleventy billion chords in this thing.

*hands over ears*
La, la , la, la ,la la la la laaaa!!!
Maybe one day I'll learn. Next for me is piano and then some kind of wind instrument. But hey, what the hell is the difference between a mode and a mode? That's always bugged me.

I bet Chode Boy has something for you to blow!

Bucketheads' video lessons in the new Guitar One are disgusting. He's so good I hate him.
