Title: Sigh.... Machine shop called..
Post by: SuperSix on September 06 2011, 03:29:17 PM
And the block is bad.

Well - I suppose it could run - but wouldn't for long.

Piston clearance is at .003 - max is .0025. That's before the needed hone, so the gap will be even more after that. He said I could cut it to .040, get new pistons, file-fit rings, etc. Total would be 2420.00. That includes the head work, block, line bore, balancing, etc. I can't spend that much on this car. I'm really close to just selling it and moving on. I feel like such an idiot with this car.

If anything, I think I will try to find a new block, .030 over so I can use my old pistons. Then I still need to get the cam, lifters, etc.

At least the crank isn't trash.  :icon_neutral:

It hurts, sounds like my summer. How much are the pistons?
I suppose any block could be cut to fit them.
One needs to take a longer view amortizing the perceived costs over future years.
Especially if it will be street driven and live a long life hereafter.

The 4.1 build always intrigued me.

Why not wait until Bowling Green and maybe see what pops up there?

I thought everyone that actually owned a messageboard was rich.  I mean all of you live in premier parts of the country.  I mean no one owns a messageboard and lives in BF-Egypt.  I guess even the rich have their budgets though.  I'd be willing to bet that some of the major parts pimps could bring a running engine to Bowling Green for pickup for less than your machine shop estimate.

If you sell it off will you get what you have in it Mark? If not then you might as well build it and then get the cash out of it. If you were closer I'd offer you the 20 blot block I've got sitting here, but it's an 85 not a 109. I've also got a 4.1 but it will need more work than I think you want to put in it.

Not going this year. :(

Just because I have the $$, doesn't mean I want to spend it. I am always worried about losing my job, so I am pretty cautious about my savings. that, and I don't know if I want to spend that kind of money on a .040 over setup.

I doubt it. Highly. I have made some smart purchases, but I have a shit ton of money in this build so far. FAR more than I ever expected to spend on what I was told was basically turn key, sans some basic parts. I think, like Pyro, I am just fucking over all the car problems lately. Acura AC, Cadillac AC, and last night the 19 year old Cadillac air suspension finally gave out.

So what do I do? Say fuck it, sell ALL of the cars and strap myself into a car payment? Sell the Caddy and get another used car that has a whole other set of problems? Maybe it's frustration that I am now locked into this shitpile. I should have bought it and parted it out, I would have made a decent chunk of cash.

I am working on a complete recently rebuilt motor, if the price is right, I will buy that and put all of the good parts together and be done with it.

Here's something to look over - the $$$ spent to date on a car that "just needed a starter and a few things". I'm not bitter or anything.  :013:

I bought a few of those need a starter cars . . .   :013: And learned fast about if it runs value VS if it is a basket one.  The snag is most of the time the seller has no idea.  And if he does then you go back and

See if you can find an NA block & cut it to use your 30's pistons or sell them & buy some 10's.
I just sold & NA stock block & 4.1 Stocker with lots of parts included like crank, oil pan, intake, front cover flywheel & balancer for about $1K. The NA blocks work fine & are much cheaper.

Fix yours, then you will know what you have rather than wondering if  you have a pig in a poke waiting to bust out.

Do you think I should spend that much on a .040 block?

sure, you are not trying to make 700 hp and many have gone .040" over without a problem.

Fix the Buick and replace the Caddy with it.

Fix the Buick and replace the Caddy with it.

Not a bad idea at all. This would let you get rid of the caddy before it looses more value.

$150 for a used stock location intercooler?
$185 for a used stock starter?

So a chebby can be built with 4 or 5 thou but a buick will blow up with 3 thou clearance?
Title: Re: Sigh.... Machine shop called..

piston wall clearance is dependent upon the piston composition.  Stock pistons are cast and must be fit tight otherwise the rings will be worn out very quickly from rock...Forged can be fit more loosely depending upon the particular alloy used...but, they still wear the rings faster as they rock until warmed up.

Are you in a hurry to get the car together? I wise man once told me, walk away, tomorrow look at it with fresh eyes, and he gave me permission to drink heavily. He might not have put it exactly like that but that's how I took it(I wish I could put an icon here). Cars in general try your patience, these cars just excel at it.

I think these cars with their age drive most owners close to the "Very Edge" at times. When they run good they are Great! But when they start breaking stuff they can make all of us at some point consider selling or torching the car! The summer I went thru 3 GM fuel pumps I was very close. One year I did put an ad in the paper for 1 day & overpriced it. I had some calls & one tire kicking test pilot but that was the only time it ever made me that frustrated.
Hang in there & you will work it out in time. Just ignore it for a week & go have some family time or whatever makes you unwind.

Mark, I assume everything else checked out ok on the block. If that's the case...and it were me...then I'd sell the .030's and grab a set of .040's. If you grab another block...then you're gonna have to have it bored and honed to fit the .030's anyway. As Steve stated...you ain't gonna be making a shitload of horsepower...s o .040 will be just fine. You're other alternative is to sell everything and pack the project in...and get your money back out of it.

Called the machine shop on Friday and gave the go ahead. Still tons of shit to do, and I decided I'm not going to kill myself physically or financially to get it done quickly.

I wouldn't say I have "nothing" into it. I have more into it than it's worth, but I don't plan on selling it.

Chris - this car will be nowhere NEAR as nice as yours when it's done..

Don't have near the money but I've got a heck of a lot more time in mine. Several hundred hours doing repairs but only like 3K in all the parts so far. :icon_super:  Car included. :D
