Some use llamas to guard their sheep and goats from coyotes, bobcats, or whatever wants to kill a few of them.

Sometimes those cute llamas decide to kick the crap out of the guy that is feeding them.  I think it is a time of the year thing, but, I would hate to have to drag the carcass into the back of my truck if one was foolish enuf to stomp me.

Complete moron asking a question in 3... 2...

What's the difference between a llama and an alpaca? They look the damn same to me.

It pains me to admit this but I bought an issue of Goats Magazine a few years back when I saw it on a rack at a pet store. I thought for sure I'd be able to make a really funny "Steve's been teaching me to read!" joke but it never happened. I've had a goddamned goat magazine next to the toilet for 3 years... don't know whether to laugh or cry.

Cry!  Weep!

same family, but llamas are quite a bit larger than an alpaca and have coarser hair.  Alpacas are generally a bit more gentle, but, contrary to the cutesy ads on tv, they can be mean too.

In New Mexico one can't throw a rock without hitting an alpaca farmer, not sure if it's that way all over. I've *heard* that there is/was a hefty tax reward for farming alpaca, but that was on one of those John Stossel (sp?) late night exposes so who knows.

you shear an alpaca for its extremely soft wool, but there is only a few ounces per animal.  I have not heard of a subsidy.  Most of the wool subsidies were eliminated a few years ago and that is why the sheep numbers are dwindling.  It costs as much to shear a sheep as the wool is worth and there are no shearers left cause that is freakin; hard work.

That is why I bought the hair sheep to play with...no shearing.

There are huge government subsidies for Alpacas, the main reason you have seen them become popular. I stopped in an Alpaca store while in Chicago a few months ago, the items are outrageously expensive. I believe it was $1800 or more for a coat.

Sure wish there was a huge tax break for working one's whole life and having nothing to show for it.

Sure would be easier! I say we lower taxes for the rich and then I hope like hell that someday I'll get to enjoy what I vote for.
